TEACHING & LEARNING
BY CARRIE SCAMPTON (HEAD OF TEACHING & LEARNING - PRIMARY)
The beginning of a new year often brings a sense of a “fresh start”. New students, classrooms, teachers, and routines all signal that something is beginning again. For students, this sense of starting afresh can be powerful. It reminds them that learning is an ongoing journey and that every day offers another opportunity to focus, practise, and improve.
But a fresh start is more than simply setting new resolutions; it requires intentional action. In education, it reflects an important truth: learning improves through practice, effort, and the choices students make each day. Every lesson presents small but important opportunities and decisions. Will I listen carefully? Will I try even when something feels difficult? Will I ask for help if I need it? Daily choices play a significant role in how much students learn over time.
Research consistently shows that natural ability can take us only so far. Real progress happens when learning is clearly taught, regularly practised, and supported by positive habits.
At BHCS, a fresh start means:
Teachers:
Create classrooms where students try new things, practise their skills, and take responsibility for their learning.
Provide clear, step-by-step instructions and demonstrate what successful learning looks like.
Establish consistent routines that help students focus.
Value and protect the learning environment by helping students understand how their actions impact their progress and others' learning.
Encourage persistence and recognise the effort students put into improving.
Students:
Demonstrate positive learning choices by being prepared, organised, and ready to begin.
Listen carefully and follow instructions.
Participate actively by practising new skills, contributing ideas, and applying what you learn.
Show perseverance and determination when tasks become challenging.
Reflect on your learning to improve next time.
Parents:
Reinforce the message that learning requires practice, perseverance, and positive choices.
Praise effort, encourage determination, and normalise mistakes as part of the learning process.
Support regular practice to strengthen understanding.
Create calm spaces at home that support focused reading or homework.
Encourage responsibility and consistent habits to help children develop independence.
Success in learning rarely comes from one big moment. More often, it is built gradually through the small choices students make each day: to focus, to try, and to keep going. A fresh start reminds students that every day is another opportunity to improve. As students experience the results of their effort and persistence, confidence grows, and they begin to take greater ownership of their learning.
