SUN-SMART

BY IVAN SESKIS (DEPUTY PRINCIPAL - TEACHING & LEARNING)

At this time of year in Victoria, though we are now in autumn, the sun's ultraviolet radiation (UV) can still reach very high levels. The need for sun protection when outdoors is still important for everyone.

For those that are old enough, do you remember the "Slip, Slop, Slap" campaign in the 80s featuring "Sid the Seagull"? I still remember the catchy jingle. Slip, slop, slap. Slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, and slap on a hat. In 2007, they added "Seek shade" and "Slide on some sunglasses."

Great advice!

Simple actions can make a big difference, including:

  • Wear sun-protective clothing, hats and sunglasses when outdoors.
  • Apply SPF50/50+ broad-spectrum sunscreen before heading outside.
  • Seek shade when playing or working outside.
  • Model sun smart behaviours for your children. Children, model sun smart behaviours for your parents!

Have you heard of The SunSmart Global UV app? It provides reliable real-time and forecast UV levels for locations. The recommendation is that for any UV levels above 3, we are to apply sun-smart behaviours.
