Berry Street

The Berry Street Education Model (BSEM) is a trauma‑informed, evidence‑based framework that equips secondary educators with practical strategies to improve student engagement, self‑regulation, wellbeing, and academic growth. Designed to meet the diverse and complex needs of young people, the model combines strengths‑based practices, predictable routines, and relationship‑focused teaching to create safe, supportive, and productive learning environments.
BSEM research is also a significant driver in CSC's Wellbeing and Engagement improvement process. Utilised by staff in the classroom, through to informing elements of strategic planning in Wellbeing and Engagement. We've been utilising BSEM for approximately eight years, starting with all staff undertaking a 4-day professional development course in truama-informed teaching and learning practice in 2018. Now, BSEM is an integral part of our classroom practices and is linked with Department of Education initiatives.
For 2026, all staff will undertake refresher professional development in BSEM with a focus on Restorative Practices. This will further equip staff to support students when things haven't gone well, focusing on relationships to help with the repair process rather than relying on punitive approaches.
