Garden Award

Congratulations to the VCE Vocational Major (VCCE-VM) students have been successful in an Award category for the Regional Garden Award! The students’ garden project was started with the assistance of Carolyn Trott, to help meet the requirements of the Personal Development Skills subject that all VM students must successfully complete. This subject requires the students to plan, develop and implement their ideas into a task that the group must work collaboratively on. Started in 2022, the garden project has continued to evolve and grow, as each group of students make changes to make it their own work. Well done to Kelly Roffey, who applied for the award and was successful. The Victorian School Garden Awards Presentation will take place at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne later this month.

Future Maker’s Extensions Program

Outdoor School – Bogong has had a long running partnership with Mount Beauty Secondary College, especially when it comes to the Future Maker’s program. We were the initial school trial group for the newly developed program. Run as part of our Year 9 program, the group engages with Bogong throughout what can be difficult year for these teenage students; they are finding their way through high school but have not found the focus that the senior years of school tend to provide.

Participating in this program as part of their Year 9 course opens up the opportunity for these students to apply to be a part of the Extensions Program when they are in Year 10. Most years, when students apply, there will be some lucky ones that get to participate in this life changing opportunity. Recently, we had 3 students accepted into the program. Zoe went to Nepal and Alex and Daisy went to the Kimberley. All students completed a public service activity while away, as well as sharing experiences with other students that some adults never have. Well done to these 3 students on being successful in their applications and for testing their abilities beyond their normal, everyday life’s realm.

Stepping up into 2024

Although our Year 12s are still in the midst of their end of year exams, the students remaining at school continue to work towards the end of their school year and look forward into what 2024 will be like. Our Year 10 and 11 students will have their end of year exams next week (16th and 17th November), with Year 11s completing exams for all their subjects and Year 10s completing their first exams in English and Maths.

The week after, starting Monday 20th November until Friday 1st December, our students will move into the next year of their schooling, beginning their classes for 2024, in the Advantage Program. These 2 weeks are not just about the new classes, but there are careers based activities and other opportunities, such as completing First Aid training. The last 3 days of the second week culminates in the traditional Year 11 Melbourne Experience (aka Year 11 Camp), which is an invaluable opportunity for the students to experience being independent in Melbourne and exploring universities, TAFEs and accommodation possibilities for after school.

New School Council Parent Rep

Welcome to Rachel Fallon, who will be joining School Council, taking the place of Erin Angelini. Erin was successful in obtaining a teaching position at school at the start of this term, meaning she was no longer eligible to continue as a parent rep on the council. Rachel was the only self-nominee and has filled the position. Thanks to Erin for her work on council and thanks to Rachel for stepping in!
