Year 1 and 2 Excursion
Light and Shadow Workshop & The Story of the Moving Image exhibition
The Year 1 and 2 students went to ACMI over three days, two classes at a time. In a workshop they explored the history of shadow puppets, learning about how Indigenous Australians shared stories around fire from 60,000 years ago and watching videos of tradition puppetry from Java, Indonesia, and stop-motion silhouette puppetry.
They then showcased their understanding of how light, shadow and shape can be used to tell stories by creating stunning artworks in shadowboxes. Their creativity was amazing! Some students experimented with abstract shapes, some set up a scene with their partner, and then they added light effects to make their box pop!
Students also had a chance to explore the Story of the Moving Image exhibition in the ACMI museum. Here they saw zoetropes, including a very impressive strobe light Cuphead Show display, old cameras and projectors, made their own digital flip books, added sound effects to short videos, and had the opportunity to play new and retro video games.
