Year 6

The Immigration Museum

Year Six Students Visit the Immigration Museum

Our Year Six excursion to the Immigration Museum was a memorable one. We revisited information about First Peoples. Did you know that the aboriginals have been living on this land for over 65,000 years? A long time, right! Immigrants have only been coming to our country for about 270 years.

We spent some time doing collaborative work around immigrants and their story about why they came to Australia and the challenges that they faced. The stories were from the early 1900s and spanned throughout this century.

We were able to tour the museum to look at the different exhibits that were shown. We had our own passport that we used as a resource of information and in addition, where we could record information that we learnt about. The facts drew us in with important photographs and items from the 19th & 20th centuries.

We read about Voices Across Time which detailed different immigrants from various time periods. One in particular was Ally Heathcote. She came on the HMS boat from England. She maintained a diary which was important to her, especially as it was a personal recount that she wrote in during her journey across the seas.

We viewed a film that showed the different reasons for others to migrate to our country. The bulk of it was due to war and conflict so that made us feel upset as it was confronting to see the disappointing ways they had to leave their country.

We feel privileged to have a safe country that others can come to and call home.

We recommend you visit the Immigration Museum. Super easy to get to on the train as it’s located on Flinders Street. It was a valuable learning experience to learn about Australian History and Immigration.
