Lakeside Students RISE Up
Lakeside Students RISE Up
As part of our endeavours to acknowledge and highlight positive behaviour, we present RISE Awards at Flag Assembly each Monday. RISE is an acronym for Resilience, Integrity, Service and Empathy. Each teacher identifies one student who has made a concerted effort to display the attribute of the week. This might be someone who exemplifies it readily, or it might be given to someone who has worked hard to really improve themselves in that area. These are our key character traits for the Primary School which help to reinforce our school behaviour expectations.
R - Resilience
I - Integrity
S - Service
E - Empathy
Parents are welcome to attend our Flag Assemblies, held on the Primary basketball court.

Year 5 Camp: A Journey Back in Time at Sovereign Hill
Last week, our Year 5 students embarked on an unforgettable adventure to Sovereign Hill, Ballarat. The long bus ride was filled with excitement and anticipation as students eagerly looked forward to stepping back in time and experiencing life in the 1850s.
Upon arrival, the students were immersed in the history of the gold rush era. They watched an incredible gold pour demonstration, witnessing firsthand how a bar of 24-karat gold was melted into liquid and then transformed back into a solid. The candle-dipping and confectionery-making demonstrations were also highlights, as students learned traditional techniques used in the 19th century.
On the first night, the group was treated to the spectacular AURA light and sound show, which brought to life the rich history of the Goldfields through an incredible display of storytelling and special effects.
Meals were enjoyed at the Charles Napier Hotel and The New York Bakery, where students got a taste of dining in historical settings. Thursday was filled with exploration, as students wandered through the park, visited various shops, and took a fascinating tour of the Red Hill Mine. This provided a glimpse into the challenges and triumphs of miners searching for gold underground.
Before heading home on Friday, students played an interactive game of Gold Fever. This engaging activity demonstrated the injustices faced by gold miners before the Eureka Stockade, offering valuable insights into the social struggles of the time.
Throughout the camp, students experienced what life was like in the 1850s and gained a deeper appreciation for Australia’s gold rush history. The hands-on activities, historical demonstrations, and immersive experiences made this trip an unforgettable learning adventure.
Overall, the Year 5 camp to Sovereign Hill was a fantastic success, leaving students with wonderful memories and a greater understanding of our nation’s past.

Year 1 Zoo Adventure
On Friday 7th March our enthusiastic Year 1 students went on a thrilling visit to the zoo. This educational adventure was a fantastic opportunity for the children to learn about animals from around the world and their unique habitats. The children witnessed firsthand how the unique characteristics of animals and their habitats contribute to their survival.
The children particularly enjoyed watching the tigers, the antics of the meerkats, the playful orangutans, and exploring the butterfly house.
We are proud of our Year 1 students for their enthusiasm and excellent behaviour throughout the trip. A big thank you to our wonderful parent helpers for making this memorable excursion possible. This experience has not only enriched the students' understanding of science and nature but also fostered a deeper connection with the world around them.

Celebrate Harmony Day with Us - March 21st!
Harmony Day celebrations will take place next week on March 21st. This important day provides an opportunity for us all to acknowledge and embrace the rich cultural diversity within our school community and broader Australian society.
This year's theme, "We All Have a Role to Play," encourages each of us to reflect on how we can contribute to a more harmonious and inclusive environment. To celebrate this theme, we invite all students to wear a splash of orange, symbolising our commitment to inclusivity and unity. This simple act of participation will serve as a visual reminder of the importance of diversity and acceptance in our community.
In addition to our dress code, we are excited to host an incursion that will enhance our understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity. This engaging program will involve interactive activities and discussions that aim to foster respect and understanding among students of all backgrounds. We believe that this experience will not only enrich their learning but also strengthen the bonds within our school community.
We kindly encourage you to talk about the significance of Harmony Day with your child and to support their engagement by discussing the various ways we can all contribute to promoting inclusivity. Your involvement is vital in reinforcing these values outside the classroom.
Thank you for your ongoing support in nurturing a compassionate and respectful learning environment. Together, we can celebrate our differences and work towards a more harmonious future.
Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS)
Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS) serves as the overseas aid and development agency of the Lutheran Church of Australia and New Zealand. Through this vital organization, Lutheran communities across Australia and New Zealand have the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of those facing hardship through poverty, injustice, and crisis. ALWS works hand-in-hand with communities, supporting them as they build stronger, more sustainable futures for themselves and their families.
We are excited to share that our sister school, Good News Lutheran College in Tarneit, will be hosting a Walk My Way event on March 30th. This inspiring initiative brings communities together to support children's education in regions where access to schooling can be challenging. If you are interested please see the flyer below.
Here at Lakeside College, we've set an ambitious and meaningful goal for 2025: to help 75 children access education through ALWS. With each child's schooling costing $25, we're aiming to raise $1,875 throughout the year. To achieve this target, we will be organising various service activities and fundraising events throughout the year. This is a wonderful opportunity for our community to make a tangible difference in children's lives.
Please stay tuned for updates about our upcoming service activities and how you can contribute to this important cause. Together, we can help create brighter futures for children who might otherwise miss out on the gift of education.
Library Borrowing Now Open!
We are delighted to announce that library borrowing has begun for 2025! Our shelves are stocked with exciting new titles and beloved classics just waiting to be discovered by eager readers.
To keep our books in the best condition possible, we kindly remind all students to bring their library bags when borrowing. These bags help protect books during transport between school and home, ensuring they stay in great shape for everyone to enjoy.
Get ready for some friendly competition! We've introduced an eye-catching pictograph display in the library that tracks book borrowing throughout the year. Watch as our reading community's progress grows week by week. Which class will emerge as our most enthusiastic readers? The pictograph will tell the tale!
Happy reading, everyone!
Victorian Premiers Reading Challenge
We are excited to announce the launch of the Victorian Premiers Reading Challenge on Monday, 24th March, and will run until 30th August this year. This initiative aims to foster a love of reading among children and students, encouraging them to engage with a variety of books throughout the year.
Since its inception in 2005, the Victorian Premiers Reading Challenge has seen over 4.5 million students participate and collectively read more than 63 million books. It is a wonderful opportunity for your child to not only enhance their literacy skills but also to discover the joy and wonder that comes from reading.
The Challenge is designed to cater to the varying reading stages of our students. For children in Prep to Year 2, the goal is to read or 'experience' 30 books alongside their parents and teachers. Students from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read a total of 15 books. To participate, students can either read independently or share the reading experience with a family member or educator. Once a book has been read, you can log into your account to record your child's progress.
In the coming week, we will be sending individual logins to each family, allowing you and your child to track their reading journey. We strongly encourage all families to involve themselves in this initiative, as it not only helps in developing reading skills but also builds a supportive culture around literature within our school community.
Thank you for your continued support in promoting literacy and encouraging a life-long love of reading in our students. Should you have any questions regarding the Victorian Premiers Reading Challenge, please feel free to reach out to your Classroom teacher/English Teacher.
