The Role of Service Learning at Lakeside College:
Living Out Our Faith Through Action
At Lakeside College, we are committed to providing a holistic education that nurtures both the academic and spiritual growth of our students. As a Lutheran school, we recognise the importance of living out our faith - not just in the classroom, but also through tangible acts of service. Service learning plays a vital role in this mission, offering our students the opportunity to put their Christian faith into action by serving others. Service learning is not just a program; it is an integral part of who we are as a Christ-centred community.
Faith in Action: A Lutheran Perspective
Service learning, as we understand it, is the blending of meaningful service with intentional learning. For our students, it is about more than just helping others—it is about growing spiritually and intellectually through the experiences they encounter while serving. The Bible teaches us to love our neighbours as ourselves (Mark 12:31), and this call to service is foundational to the Lutheran faith. Jesus Christ, in His time on Earth, was the ultimate example of service and compassion. By following His example, we are reminded that our actions must reflect His love for all people.
Our service learning initiatives provide students with the opportunity to embody these values in a way that is both impactful and meaningful. Whether it’s helping the less fortunate, participating in environmental stewardship, or supporting local and global outreach efforts, service learning offers students the chance to step outside of their everyday routines and engage with the world in a deeper, more Christ-centred way.
Service Projects that Make a Difference
Over the course of the school year, our students are involved in a wide range of service projects designed to meet the needs of others in both our local community and beyond. These projects give our students the opportunity to actively contribute to causes that align with Christian values, such as helping those in need, supporting the elderly and addressing environmental concerns.
At Lakeside College, there are two major organisations that we actively raise funds for. Firstly, we raise funds for the Australian Lutheran World Services (ALWS) organisation that reaches out to people hurt by poverty, injustice and crisis. We then work together to support those who are hurt as they build a better life for themselves and their families. I have taken this opportunity to share the ALWS mandate, vision and mission for your information.
ALWS Mandate
We love because God first loved us. Jesus said, “For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited me in; naked, and you clothed me; I was sick, and you visited me; I was in prison, and you came to me… Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers or sisters of mine, even the least of them, you did it to me.” (Matthew 25:35-36,40).
ALWS Vision
ALWS envisages a world where love comes to life (see 1 John 4:9-12); a world where all people live in just societies, where we are all empowered to achieve our full potential, uphold our rights and the rights of others for a life with peace and dignity; and where we are all inspired to remember, welcome and support those who suffer from poverty and injustice (see Galatians 2:10 and Leviticus 25:35).
ALWS Mission
ALWS reaches out in love, for justice. We bring together people willing to work in service to help end suffering. As partners, we work openly and accountably, supporting programs which welcome, respect and bring hope through care to those fleeing from, or hurt by, disaster, conflict, poverty or oppression. We add our voice to the voices of those unheard and excluded, together crying out for justice so that we can all live in just and sustainable communities.
The second organisation we support as a college is a community Lutheran church in Indonesia. In particular, our students fundraise for a team of carers who work with students with disabilities. The money raised by our students helps support the training of carers who work with special needs children so that these children can have greater access to therapies and community needed to support their growth and development.
Our Service in Action program this year will see our Year 11 students being trained to support the development of literacy skills in our younger students. For the past few weeks, our students have been trained to assist with the development of phonics and reading skills. They will work with their younger colleagues throughout the year and will be in a position to see students grow in confidence and skills.
Service learning isn’t just about performing tasks for others; it’s also about reflection and learning. After each service project, students are encouraged to reflect on their experiences through discussions, writing assignments and group activities. These reflections help students understand the deeper meaning of service and connect their actions to their faith. The experience of helping others often leads to personal growth as students realise how blessed they are and how their own efforts can make a significant difference in the lives of others.
The Impact of Service Learning
The impact of service learning goes far beyond the projects themselves. It shapes our students into compassionate, thoughtful and responsible individuals who understand the importance of helping others in both word and deed. These experiences provide students with lifelong skills, such as leadership, empathy and problem solving, that will continue to guide them as they grow in their faith and engage with the world.
As we continue to nurture our students’ academic and spiritual development, we are proud to offer service learning opportunities that allow them to live out the teachings of Christ. Through these acts of service, our students are not only making a difference in the lives of others - they are also being transformed in their own faith journey, becoming more like Christ each day.
In Christ’s love,
Mr Robert Tassoni
