On Friday, 28 February approximately 25% of the Year 11 cohort participated in a special training day to become student-catechists for St Aloysius Parish, Cronulla. These dedicated students will be teaching Catholic Scripture at Burraneer Bay Public School on Tuesday afternoons to children from Kindergarten to Year 6. With over 200 students enrolled in Catholic Scripture at Burraneer Bay, this is the largest number of Catholic Scripture students in the Sutherland Shire. Our Year 11 students will work in teams of three, each leading their own class.
The program follows the curriculum developed by the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) and provided by the Parish. The student-catechists plan lessons each week from a teacher’s manual, using creative strategies to effectively convey the teachings of our faith. Their lessons combine learning and fun, incorporating worksheets, acting, and singing to engage the children and share the message of Jesus in both practical and theoretical ways.
This responsibility calls for leadership, patience, and a deep commitment to the Catholic faith. Through this program, our Year 11 students are living out the Lasallian motto, "Faith, Service, and Community," and exemplifying "Faith in Action." Many students who participate in the Catechist Program continue on to become teachers in Catholic primary and high schools.
Our Year 11 students will teach their first lesson on Tuesday, 11 March. We wish them all the best as they begin this rewarding and important journey. Thank you so much to Ms Gamsaragan for all your hardwork and commitment organising this wonderful program.
