Junior School News

As we begin to look towards the end of the first term of 2025, and as the weeks have flown by, the Junior School has continued to shine brightly, creating an amazing flow in their learning and a hum within their classrooms.
Prep News
The growth and progress of our Preppies continue to amaze us as they build strong and consistent routines for life at school and what great learning looks like. They have taken each day in their stride, with fewer tears and a growing enthusiasm to achieve and learn.
As they continue to experience all that school has to offer, they have worked hard to understand their emotions and feelings, which includes their new ‘Zones of Regulation.’ The Zones of Regulation help us organize our feelings, state of alertness, and energy levels into four colored zones: Blue, Green, Yellow, and Red. Through the story of The Colour Monster, the Preps are working to identify how they are feeling, as well as how those around them are feeling.
As the Preps’ literacy and maths programs continue to extend their learning, a pivotal component is their fluency work. This includes their fluency partner work in reading, where they are paired each day into the same partners—‘apples’ and ‘bananas’—with each getting a chance to use a different skill set, such as naming letters with pace and accuracy. This fluency focus continues into their maths lessons with naming as many numbers as they can within one minute.
We cannot wait to see the Preps throughout their first year of school and the journey we get to be a part of. What a special bunch they are!
Go, Miss Wood! She has been smashing it in her new wellbeing role, working closely with a range of students and teachers to build the most supportive and positive learning environments.
Year One News
The Year Ones have found their groove and are working hard every day to build on their knowledge and learning from last year!
In MSL, Year One has been busy learning about the three sounds of ‘y’. This includes the rule of ‘Thief Y.’ In a one-syllable word, ‘y’ says ‘i,’ and in a two-syllable word, ‘y’ says ‘e’. This includes words like happy, sixty, and grumpy (two syllables) and my, try, cry (one syllable).
In Writing, the Year Ones have been working exceptionally hard to gather their knowledge and skills to identify the parts of a sentence. They have been expanding simple sentences by upgrading their nouns and adding more information through ‘when’ and ‘where.’ This includes changing a sentence such as ‘The cat slept.’ to ‘At midnight, the cat slept in the warm bed.’
The Year Ones have shown their keen mathematician skills through exploring the concept of addition, which included looking at partitioning—breaking numbers into two or more parts—and finding the whole. They have demonstrated these skills through a range of activities such as number bonds, equations, and bar models.
We cannot be more thankful for our superstar supporters, the LSO team! We are so lucky to have our exceptional and hardworking LSOs, who show never-ending support and unconditional care for both students and teachers.
Year Two
Year Twos have been building on their understanding of a range of reading rules, including the ‘Thief Y’ and ‘Corn in the Barn.’ The ‘Corn in the Barn’ rule looks at two of the controlled-r vowels: ‘or’ in words such as pork, popcorn, and torch, and ‘ar’ in words such as cart, shark, and star.
In Writing, the Year Twos have been identifying and defining adjectives to improve and enrich their sentences. They have also continued to focus on their handwriting through daily handwriting sprints.
In Maths, Year Two has completed their first unit on time, specifically looking at calendars, days of the week, and comparing durations such as minutes and hours. They are now jumping into addition and subtraction, exploring a range of strategies such as number lines, ten frames, and bridging to ten.
We love when siblings get the opportunity to visit and show off their amazing work. The room is always filled with pride!
Athletics Day
Our annual Athletics Carnival was a day filled with new experiences, challenges, and lots of fun for our Junior School students. We loved seeing and hearing them cheer and chant for each other, showing amazing spirit and encouragement!
