News from the Italian Rooms

Ciao a tutti!

Term 2 was another busy term in Italian, filled with exciting and engaging learning experiences across all year levels!

Prep students had lots of fun discovering the Italian language, especially after meeting our special class friend, Pinocchio! With help from the story Ecco Pinocchio, they learnt the names of body parts and played interactive games. This term we are sharing the story of Sogni D’Oro, counting the cheeky pecorelle.

In Grade 1, our focus was on i mezzi di trasporto (modes of transport). We enjoyed singing the Trasporto song and learning words like elicottero, bicicletta, motocicletta, aeroplano, and autobus. Can you guess what they mean? Many are quite similar to English! We are now learning names of animali through the shared story of La festa di Pollicino.

Grade 2 explored the theme of cibi (food). The students loved joining in with the shared reading of Mangia! Mangia! and expressing foods liked and disliked. This term we are focusing on vocabulary about animali domestici (pets).

Grade 3 loved the story of Giacco e il Fagiolo, especially making their own storielle matte (crazy stories). We are currently exploring the animali allo zoo and constructing sentences, with gender agreement, to describe their chosen animale.

Grade 4 enjoyed extending the vocabulary of the body. They especially loved creating a mostro  and writing a short descriptive text for their poster. We have started learning about L’ora (time). We will be looking at how to ask the time, tell the time and describe their daily routine.

Grade 5 extended their knowledge about animali (animals). We played games to learn animal names, revised Italian articles (il, la, lo, l’), and built up to describing what animals look like, what they eat, and where they live. Their colourful and informative posters turned out beautifully! Our current topic of study is La Casa (The home).

Grade 6 had a special highlight last term—replying to letters in Italian to students at Preston West Primary School! After learning about letter structure, common expressions, and practising translations, students wrote their own letters to introduce themselves to their amico or amica di penna. They shared their age, interests, families, pets, favourite subjects, and hobbies—then designed creative envelopes to match! Our focus is now on la famiglia, revising names of family members and learning the names of extended family members.

We are looking forward to another exciting semester.

A Presto,
