Learning in Year 6

Year 6 - Term 2 Highlights

Term 2 was an incredibly productive and enriching time for our Year 6 students, filled with creativity, discovery, and personal growth.

Literacy and Poetry:  Last term, our budding poets explored the beauty and power of poetry, experimenting with both ballads and free verse. They impressed us with their thoughtful word choices, emotional expression, and creative flair. Each student crafted original poems that captured vivid imagery, personal reflections, and strong voices — a true celebration of their growing confidence as writers.

Class Novel Study : A major highlight of the term was our deep dive into the novel Once by Morris Gleitzman. Through Felix’s harrowing journey, students developed a deeper understanding of the Holocaust and the impacts of World War II. The class discussions were mature and insightful, as students demonstrated empathy and historical understanding while reflecting on themes of courage, friendship, and survival.

Mathematics in Action : Maths came to life in Term 2 with a hands-on geometry project: designing their own mini golf courses! This engaging activity gave students the chance to apply their knowledge of acute, obtuse, and right angles in a practical and imaginative way. The results were not only mathematically accurate but also wildly creative and fun to explore.

Sport and Team Spirit : We enjoyed not one but two exciting Sports Gala Days this term. Our students displayed great sportsmanship and teamwork across a range of sports. A special mention goes to our footy team, who showcased exceptional skill and determination to take out the finals win — an outstanding achievement!

Looking Ahead to Secondary School : As the end of primary school draws nearer, our students took an important step toward the future. We were thrilled that so many students were offered placements at their preferred secondary schools for 2026 — a testament to their hard work, positive attitudes, and readiness for the next stage of their learning journey.

Performing Arts – Shrek Jr. in the Spotlight!  Term 2 also saw the Year 6 students dive into the magical world of theatre as they began preparing for this year’s much-anticipated school production of Shrek Jr. With roles cast and rehearsals underway, the energy and excitement have been contagious!

Many students have embraced the opportunity to develop their acting, singing, and stagecraft skills, taking on characters big and small — from beloved favourites like Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey to fairy-tale creatures and village folk. Whether learning choreography, rehearsing solo lines, or harmonising in ensemble numbers, each student has shown dedication and enthusiasm.
