Learning in Year 5

Wow! What a jam-packed term we have ahead of us! In just nine weeks, we are fitting in our usual learning as well as lots of production rehearsals, two weeks of swimming and an exciting Integrated excursion. Miss Syme and Ms Jay are tired just thinking about it!
English
The Year 5s have started the term with planning stories based on well-known fairy tales. They are adding their own adaptations to make a unique final product. Our weekly grammar focus is linked to narratives, helping students continue to strengthen their writing. We have also started a new class novel, with 5A reading Holes by Louis Sachar and 5B reading Boy Overboard by Morris Gleitzman. Everyone is already on the edge of their seat, wanting to know what happens next!
Mathematics
We have kickstarted Maths this term with a deep dive into fractions. The unit began with students ordering, comparing and simplifying fractions. They have also learnt different ways to find equivalent fractions including multiplication and division.
Integrated
Our topic this term for Integrated is Wages, Work & the World. The Year 5s will be learning:
- what it means to be employed
- why we need to work
- what is tax and why we have to pay it
- how to make smart financial decisions
- whether money makes us happy
Students have started thinking about what a job description for a Year 5 student would include, ready to become 'employed' next week. They will sign their working contract, receive a salary, pay tax and deposit their earnings into the Year 5 Bank of Us to earn the fun end of term excursion!
