Year 3/4 Team News

with Bec, Mary, Katja, Grace, Alison, Hayley & Steven

Hello Year  3/4 families,

The students have settled back into what is going to be a busy Term 3 and we look forward to a productive and engaging few weeks ahead.

Year 3/4 Camp

After much anticipation, our camp is only 3 weeks away (Wed 20th – Fri 22nd August.) This week you would have received a note outlining what needs to be packed and a medical form. Please return this form, filled out, to your class teacher as soon as possible. Look out for further communication in the coming weeks.

Book Week Incursion

As part of our Book Week celebrations, Perform Education will be presenting their highly interactive show, Treasure Hunt on Wednesday 13th August.  It is based on shortlisted books from the Children's Book Council of Australia awards 2025. You are now able to pay and consent to this incursion on COMPASS.

The Book Week parade will be on Friday 15th August. Students are asked to dress up as a book character. We look forward to seeing these.

Homework began this week-

3/4 Homework Reminder

Homework is an important tool for reinforcing what is being learnt at school and we provide our students each week with differentiated activities to cater to their needs, abilities, and interests.

Homework tasks include:

  • Reading – Four nights per week for a minimum of 15 minutes.Students are encouraged to choose their own "just right" books and record the titles on the homework sheet. They can select books based on their individual interests or reading levels.
  • Maths – Playing number games learnt in class at home to continue building number sense and fluency. Each week, students will have two games to play, which can be enjoyed with siblings, friends, or family members. The games will often include extension ideas to further challenge students.
  • Spelling – Each week, students are introduced to a new spelling focus and given a list of words with varying difficulty. They are encouraged to choose seven words from the list and to select three personal words—words that they may have misspelt in their own writing.Suggested activities to help practice these words can be found in their Homework Book under the section "Ways to Learn Your Words."
  • Writing – A short writing task to be completed in the Homework Book. For more confident writers, we encourage students to expand their writing into longer stories, incorporating complex ideas, paragraphs, accurate punctuation, and enhanced vocabulary.

Keep working on learning times tables.

All students will receive their homework on Monday, and it is due back at school by Friday of the same week.

Reminders

  • Students are still required to bring a filled water bottle each day.
  • Please ensure that iPads from home are fully charged and brought to school every day.

Fortnightly Curriculum Focus:

Literacy: This week, in Reading we have been using the SWBST (Somebody Wanted But So Then) strategy to summarize fiction texts. Next week we will be learning to analyse procedural texts. We will identify the elements of a procedural text and explain how procedural texts could be improved.

In Writing we will be exploring how authors generate ideas from a range of places. We will explain what a procedural text is and what elements go into a procedural text (i.e., a heading, sub-headings, instructions in a logical order, appropriate language). We will be learning about different connectives to use in our writing.

Numeracy:  We are learning about the formula for area and perimeter and measuring accurately. We will use our knowledge of perimeter and area to design our own dream house.

Inquiry: This term our Inquiry question is “What would life be like without laws and rules?”. This is part of the Humanities learning area of the Victorian Curriculum and the Discipline, Civics & Citizenship. We will learn about laws and why they are important in our community by looking at a variety of scenarios and discussing the law being broken.

Respectful relationships: What is violence? Students will give examples of verbal, physical and emotional violence. Students will identify emotions people may feel when affected by violence. Students will describe acts of friendship that can be used to help those affected by violence.

Warm regards,

The Year 3/4 team – Rebecca Givogue & Mary Colangelo (3/4G), Katja Morris (3/4M), Grace Pante & Steven Puhar (3/4P), Alison Standish (3/4S) & Hayley Thibou (3/4T)
