We have started the year in Mathematics by focusing on place value to build a strong foundation for future learning. Students have been using MAB blocks (concrete materials) to physically build numbers and better understand ones, tens, hundreds and thousands. The students have also been using the online program Polypad to rename and expand numbers in different ways and practise adding 10 more and less, 100 more and less to strengthen their place value understanding. We look forward to use these skills for addition and subtraction.
In FLL, students have been exploring how symbols help represent identity and community through the lens of the Winter Olympic Games. We have looked at different countries’ flags, mascots, uniforms and logos, discussing what these symbols communicate about culture, values and national pride. Students have also begun designing and analysing their own Olympic-style symbols, thinking carefully about the meaning behind colours, shapes and images.
