What You Learnt

During my work placement, I gained valuable hands-on experience and developed a much deeper understanding of how important cleanliness, organisation, and teamwork are within a professional workshop environment. One of the first things I learnt was the importance of maintaining a clean and safe workspace at all times. This included regularly cleaning the workshop, putting tools back in their correct places after use, and ensuring that both my own equipment and the shared tools used by other workers were properly organised. By doing this, I learnt how a clean and well-maintained workshop can improve efficiency, prevent accidents, and create a safer environment for everyone working there. I also learnt the importance of respecting other workers’ tools and equipment by returning everything in good condition and making sure items were easy to locate when needed.

Throughout the placement, I was introduced to the mechanical side of the industry and gained knowledge about how trucks operate and function on a daily basis. I learnt about the different components within a truck, including the engine systems, air tanks, braking systems, and other essential mechanical parts that allow heavy vehicles to operate safely and efficiently. Understanding the purpose of the air tanks and how compressed air systems are used in trucks helped me realise how complex modern transport vehicles are and how every component plays an important role in the overall performance of the vehicle.

In addition, I discovered how even the smallest issue or damaged component can lead to major mechanical problems if not identified early. Something as minor as a loose fitting or worn-out part can affect the safety of a truck or even create hazards within the workshop. This taught me the importance of attention to detail, regular inspections, and preventative maintenance. Overall, the placement gave me practical experience, improved my knowledge of workplace safety and mechanics, and helped me develop important skills such as responsibility, organisation, communication, and problem-solving that will benefit me in future career opportunities.

Words of Appreciation:

I would like to sincerely thank Poyser Motor Group for supporting students through the Structured Workplace Learning program and for providing me with the opportunity to complete my placement in a professional workshop environment. This experience gave me valuable insight into the automotive industry and allowed me to develop important practical and workplace skills.

The staff are extremely supportive and helpful throughout my placement. They took the time to guide me through different tasks, explain procedures clearly, and show me how to complete jobs correctly and safely. Their patience and willingness to teach helped me build confidence and improve my understanding of mechanical work and workshop expectations.

This experience also helped me strengthen important skills such as mechanical knowledge, time management, communication, and problem-solving. I learnt how even small details can make a big difference in a workshop and how important it is to pay attention to safety, organisation, and quality when working on vehicles and equipment.

I would like to thank the staff at Poyser Motor Group once again for supporting Wedderburn College students and for providing valuable workplace learning opportunities that help students prepare for future careers and pathways.
