CURRICULUM

*Please remind your child to go to the toilet before they enter the classroom.

Phonics and reading

We are learning about the letter R, including recognising it as a beginning sound and reading it in four-letter words such as frog.

Our learning focus will include:

  • Understanding the phonemes (the sound each letter makes)
  • Learning the cued articulation for these sounds
  • Identifying where we might see each letter in a word
  • Practising the graphemes (the way we write the letter), including correct letter formation
  • Reading and writing 3 letter words using the sounds we know

What can you do at home?

• Support your child to read the decodable book in their Reading Pocket. Try and aim to read every day, if you can.

• The 'Roll and Read' page is a great way to practise sounding out and blending words, especially for students who find reading sentences a little challenging.

•Review the letter names and sounds for K and H, as well as the sounds we have learned so far using the cards below. You can also find these cards in your child's book pocket. When practising, say them like this: “A spells /a/.” Ask your child if they can show you the cued articulation for the sounds.

•Learn the Heart Words (in red booklet)

• Work through the optional UFLI pages.

Literature: reading responses and writing

Our mentor text is Come Together Again by Isaiah Firebrace. This non-fiction text continues to support our CBL learning as we explore the question of “who” is on Country. We have continued this learning from last week because students are greatly enjoying the knowledge they are gaining about First Nations histories and cultures.

This week, our focus is on music and dance. Students will learn about Aboriginal instruments, different dance styles and important musical performers. They will document their learning in a journal, which will be sent home at the end of the week for you to share together.

In Writing, students will practise the formation of the letter R, as well as reviewing formation of previously learnt letters. They will sound out and write CVC words using the sounds they know, and write short, dictated sentences. They will use their lined writing books to have a go at independently writing their own sentences using a picture prompt.

What can you do at home?

•Practice letter formation previously taught letters (see the picture cards above)

•Provide activities that build hand strength and coordination, such as playing with playdough, threading beads or using tweezers to pick up small objects.

•Write some 3 letter words using the taught sounds (see the picture cards above!)

Maths

We are continuing our exploration of Shape. Students will sort objects in different ways and classify shapes by their features. They will also create a shape picture, carefully selecting shapes that best represent the object they are making.

What can you do at home?

• Spot shapes in the environment by going on a 'shape hunt' around the house or outside and ask your child to identify circles, triangles, squares and rectangles in real-life objects.

• Make shapes together by using everyday materials like playdough, sticks or toothpicks to create different shapes and talk about their features (eg. sides and corners).

CBL

Students have been learning about the six layers of Country and will complete their individual posters this week. They will also create rock art, inspired by our mentor text last week, and learn a Torres Strait Islander song, Taba Naba, a traditional, joyful children’s song and sit-down dance from the Eastern Islands of the Torres Strait.

Wellbeing

SWPBS

Our focus is Be Safe by caring for yourself and seeking help when needed.

We are also continuing to work on Be a Learner by using our learning time wisely and transitioning quickly and calmly between activities.

Respectful Relationships

Our focus is on bullying prevention, with an emphasis on learning how to seek help at school and identifying trusted people students can speak to when they need support.

Cyber Safety

Students are learning about making safe choices and understanding why it is important to make safe and honest decisions when using online spaces.
