Level 3 & 4

Can you believe we’re already at Week 6? Time is flying!
Thank you to all the families who came into our classrooms for Open Afternoon Thursday afternoon. We hope you enjoyed the opportunity to participate in some hands on activities with your children.
A friendly reminder that our excursion to the Melbourne Museum is coming up quickly. Please log into Sentral for permission and payment.
CURRICULUM
Literacy
Spelling
Silent Final E (SFE) has SO many jobs that we still aren’t finished yet! Job 5 says ‘e goes at the end just ‘cos’ in words like ‘freeze’ and ‘are’. We are continuously revising the previous rules and finding them in our reading and writing.
Reading
As part of our celebrations for National Reconciliation Week, we will be taking part in a digital excursion with Kirli Saunders. During the excursion students will have the opportunity to hear Kirli read two of her thought-provoking picture books and ask questions about her work as an author, poet, artist, and musician.
In support of our learning in CBL, we will be exploring some BTN digital texts about the First Fleet to begin to understand how convicts became convicts, their living conditions and how the first fleet ended up coming to Australia.
Writing
In Writing, we will be finishing and presenting their information reports on the Kimberly Region. We will also be taking part in a whole school writing moderation task, titled ‘Wacky Weather’ which will be used by teaching staff to refine writing assessment to ensure marking fair, accurate, and consistent across the school.
WHAT CAN YOU DO AT HOME:
- ask your child to identify words in the books they’re reading that have SFE rules in them
- ask your child about what they learned during the digital excursion with Kirli Saunders
Maths
Grade 3
In Mathematics, Grade 3 students will shift their focus to Length. We will review what we already know and build on that by exploring reading and measuring distances in both millimeters and centimeters, and meters and kilometers. Moving to comparing length and exploring the metric system.
Grade 4
** length and area **
Students in Grade 4 will also be exploring reading, measuring and comparing length using metric units. We will then use those understandings to begin working on identifying and measuring perimeter.
WHAT CAN YOU DO AT HOME:
- discuss length in everyday situations using words such as meters, kilometers and distance
- encourage your child to use mathematical language to compare the length of everyday objects
- encourage students to practice their times tables. Try saying your times tables out loud, writing them down, or asking someone to quiz you. There is also Multiverse on Mathletics that can be a fun interactive way to practice.
CBL (Challenge Based Learning)
In Week 6 our Challenge Based Learning will focus on the guiding questions, ‘How has colonisation impacted First Nation Peoples connection to Country (land, culture and language)?’ We will begin by learning about the first fleet and in particular the ships that made up the first fleet, the purpose of the first fleet and the living conditions that were experienced on the crossing to Australia.
WHAT CAN YOU DO AT HOME:
- speak with your child about the first fleet – focusing on the experiences of children their age.
Wellbeing
SWPBS (School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support)
We are encouraging students to be ‘Help Seekers’ and consider who and how asking other people can be more beneficial that trying to solve all your problems alone. This is a great topic for those students who always like to be right, have perfectionistic tendencies and think that never needing help makes them strong and infallible as a person.
Kitchen Garden
We rely on the support of our wonderful parent helpers to ensure this program is safe and successful. We also warmly welcome help from extended family such as grandparents, aunts, and uncles. If you or a family member can spare some time to support the program, the sign-up link is:
We post our recipes on Showbie for students who would like to recreate the amazing dishes they make in our cooking classes.
