Gospel Reflection

5th Sunday of Easter

Summary

In this Gospel, Jesus speaks to His disciples who are feeling uncertain and unsettled.

He reassures them: “Do not let your hearts be troubled.” He reminds them to trust—not in a plan, but in Him.

Jesus tells them that He is the way, the truth, and the life, and that knowing Him is how we come to know God. Even when the disciples don’t fully understand, Jesus meets them in their questions and invites them to trust and follow Him

Scripture – John 14:1-12

Jesus said to his disciples:

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.

In my Father’s house there are many places to live. I am going now to prepare a place for you… and I will come back to take you with me, so that where I am, you may be too.

You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Thomas said, “Lord, we do not know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

Jesus answered, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

If you know me, you know the Father also.”

Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough.”

Jesus replied, “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.

Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me… Whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and even greater things than these.”

Reflection

This moment feels very real—because like the disciples, we often find ourselves unsure, stretched, and wanting clarity in the middle of busy, demanding lives. We carry pressure, responsibility, and the feeling that we need to have things figured out, yet things don’t always go to plan. Into that, Jesus doesn’t give a perfect roadmap; instead, He says, “Do not let your hearts be troubled… trust in me,” reminding us that the way forward isn’t about having all the answers, but about staying close to Him. When He says, “I am the way,” He invites us to follow Him not in theory, but in how we live each day—in our patience when we’re tired, in our kindness when it’s difficult, and in our choice to keep showing up even when things feel uncertain. And just like the disciples, we’re allowed to have questions and not fully understand, because Jesus meets us there—not with all the answers, but with His presence.

  • What is something in my life right now that feels uncertain or heavy?
  • Where am I trying to control everything instead of trusting God?
  • What might it look like for me to follow Jesus as “the way” today—in a simple, practical way?
  • Who might need me to bring calm, patience, or kindness into their day?

Prayer

Loving Jesus, you see us as we are— the parts of us that are calm, and the parts that feel unsettled.

When life feels uncertain, help us to trust in you.

You are the way, the truth, and the life. Guide us in our choices, in our words, and in the way we treat others.

When we don’t have all the answers, remind us that you are with us.

Help us to bring peace, patience, and kindness into every space we enter.

And give us the courage to follow you, one step at a time.

Amen
