From The Team

Welcome to Term 2!

We hope you had a refreshing break from the routine of school and enjoyed some quality time with family and friends. All students have transitioned back to school nicely and are looking forward to some exciting things planned this term.

We have welcomed 3 pre-service teachers in the Senior School - Mr Davidson, Miss Storr and Miss Margelis. It has been wonderful to see them grow in confidence as their teaching load increases and they start to build relationships with the students.

So far, the Senior School have participated in the whole school cross country, organised our ANZAC Day Ceremony, engaged in Digi Tech lessons on AI which is interactive learning designed to spark curiosity and ignite our future leaders, creators and innovators in the AI space.

Year 5 students went to Scoresby Secondary School with Miss Harper, Sam and Mr Davidson to participate in ‘A Day of Learning’ where they had a taste of subjects offered to Year 7 students. We still have a major focus on RESPECT, how we show it to ourselves, to others, and to our learning spaces.

Happy Mother's Day to all our Mums, we hope you have a wonderful day on Sunday!

There’s a lot to look forward to this term at Scoresby PS in the Senior School! Be sure to stay updated through the school newsletter and Compass posts for important dates and upcoming events.

What we are learning this term in Specialist

Physical Education

Students have their PE lessons on Tuesday or Wednesday, depending on the weather forecast. It is imperative that runners are worn on these days.

In Week 2 students participated in our Annual House Cross Country. The top 10 runners in each age group (U10, 11 and 12/13) will have the opportunity to then compete in our District Cross Country on Friday 15th May.

The focus this term is Athletics and fitness, in preparation for the District Athletics Carnival, which will be in Term 3. Students will learn and practise the different events before final selection is made for our team. Later in the term student will hone their basketball skills and teamwork in preparation for Hooptime.

3/4 Hooptime, for students who have selected to participate, is on Tuesday 23rd of June and 5/6 Hooptime will be mid Term 3.

I am seeking assistance from parents to coach or manage a team as we have entered 3 teams in each competition. Please see me at school on Tuesdays or Wednesdays or email (karen.coster@education.vic.gov.au) if you wish to know more or would like to help.

Visual Arts

Year 3/4

This term students will explore colour and painting. They will practise painting a gradient and mixing tints by gradually blending colours. We will be using and discussing analogous, complementary and limited colour schemes. Students will view, discuss and create an artwork inspired by Julie Ryders. They will also experiment with brush techniques and investigate different brush sizes.

Please ensure your child has an art smock to protect their school uniform, as this term is going to be messy in the Art Room!

Year 5/6

This term students in 5/6 will explore and discuss Australian Aboriginal art. They begin the term creating Rarrk art (cross hatching) inspired by artists in Arnhem land and will further explore Aboriginal symbols creating their own family story with guidance from Rheanna Lotter, a contemporary Aboriginal artist and Yuin woman. Students will also learn about and compare traditional Chinese art and Aboriginal art. They will practise different brush holds and techniques to create a painting of bamboo.

We will be using inks and paints this term so please ensure your child has an Art smock.

Cultural Studies

This term, students will investigate Schools Around the World by examining school schedules, routines, rules, facilities and access to education across a range of countries and comparing these with Australian school life. Using engaging videos, discussions and inquiry tasks, students will develop cultural understanding and explain how context influences the way schools operate.

Performing Arts

Year 3 and 4

Students will rehearse ensemble music in preparation for community performance, developing confidence, timing, and musical awareness while performing as part of a group. They will continue strengthening their instrumental skills through rehearsal of multiple parts and ensemble arrangements.

Students will also rehearse dance sequences and be introduced to Salsa, exploring rhythm, partner work, movement patterns, and expressive performance through dance.

Year 5 and 6

In Performing Arts this term, students will rehearse ensemble music in preparation for community performance, focusing on accuracy, timing, and strong ensemble skills. They will continue developing confidence when performing instrumental parts and working collaboratively within larger group performances. Students will also rehearse dance sequences and be introduced to Salsa, learning basic steps, rhythm, coordination, and performance skills while developing greater control and expression through movement.

Science

This term in Science, students will focus on Chemical Science. We will understand the particle arrangement and motion in solids, liquids and gases, including in mixtures and solutions. We will conduct experiments to investigate soluble mixtures and use sieving, filtration and evaporation to separate mixtures.

Try This...

Have a go at one or both of the Cross Maths problems. A Cross Maths puzzle is like a mix between a crossword and maths.

Fill in the missing numbers, using the green numbers from the bottom of the puzzle, so that each row and column makes a correct equation.

Day of Discovery - Scoresby Secondary College

On Monday the 27th of April, all the Year 5s took a bus to Scoresby Secondary College. When we arrived, we sat in the hall and met the person who was running the events. We weren’t the only school there, as another primary school was also attending.

Our first class was Food Technology, while the other school did pickleball/PE. First, we learnt about hygiene and safety rules. We worked in pairs in a small area that contained everything we needed, including cutting boards, measuring cups, and either an oven or grill, with a sink against the wall.

After that, we had a small break to play outside. Then it was time for Wood Technology, while the other school did Science. We learnt how to make a dice out of wood, and we even used a sanding machine and a drill! At the end of the class, the teacher sprayed the dice with a sealer.

Then we had lunch, where we were given a sausage sizzle, and we talked to some of the teachers there.

Next, we had Science. We looked at some optical illusions and listened to the teacher talk about chemical reactions. She then made “elephant toothpaste,” which is a foamy reaction. She mixed hydrogen peroxide, dish soap, and food colouring. In a separate container, she mixed dry yeast with warm water, then poured it in. A thick, foamy substance quickly flowed out!

After that, we worked in small groups and tried to keep a cup of water at 25 degrees Celsius and the correct colour. Then we formed bigger groups and attempted to stack cups into the tallest tower possible. We kept adding more and more cups until it fell. The teacher then encouraged us to try a different shape and explained that human temptation often makes us keep adding more, even when it might not work.

At the end of the day, we were happy but tired and ready to go back to school.

Whole School Cross Country

On Thursday the 30th of April, the students at Scoresby Primary School participated in House Cross Country.

Students were allowed to wear a T-shirt in either blue, red, green, or yellow to represent their house (Flinders, Macarthur, Cook, and Chisholm).

The races were divided into different age groups, from Under 5s to Under 12s. To start, most of the Year 1/2 students (Under 6s and 7s) ran two laps around the oval. The Under 5s ran one lap, while the Year 6s cheered them on. Next, the Under 9s and 10s (Years 4 and 5) ran three laps around the school, while the Under 11s and 12s (Years 5 and 6) ran four laps.

Ribbons were awarded to students who came 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, although every student did an excellent job running long distances.

The top 10 students in each race will go on to compete at the District Cross Country on May 15th. We wish them all the best of luck.

Congratulations to every student who participated in cross country—everyone did an amazing job and should be very proud. A special thank you to all the parents and staff who helped make the day a success.

Anzac Day Ceremony

On the 24th of April, Scoresby Primary School’s students and staff celebrated ANZAC Day by having a special assembly run by the School, Vice, and H.E.A.R.T captains.

We talked about what ANZAC means, which stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.

We also talked about why soldiers wear badges, and we interviewed some people who brought badges or photos of their relatives. It was very interesting to learn about what the badges mean. Many students participated by presenting badges, photos, and other items.

We recited the Ode of Remembrance and listened to the Last Post, followed by a minute of silence. All students displayed good behaviour and paid attention the whole time.
