From the Principal

Dear families,

I cannot believe how quickly the term has gone. We have achieved so much, and we continue to be incredibly proud of how our students have started the year and sustained their efforts throughout the term. I even had the privilege of helping our wonderful crossing supervisor yesterday - and no, this was not an April Fools’ Day joke! It certainly added to the joy of my morning duty.

I would like to say a huge thank you to our P&F and the OPS community. Through their fundraising efforts, we have been able to purchase brand new soccer goals. They have been a huge success, and it has been wonderful to see students enjoying them so much. We are continuing to work with P&F to purchase additional equipment to support outdoor play. I would also like to thank one of our parents, Alex, along with some Year 5/6 students, for helping to assemble the goals - it was no small feat.

At today’s assembly, our school captains spoke to students about bike and e-scooter safety. We would like to ensure our community is aware of the following:

  • Under Victorian law, children under 16 are not permitted to ride e-scooters.
  • Helmets are mandatory, speeds are capped at 20 km/h, and riders cannot use footpaths.
  • Research from National Kidsafe Day (5 March 2026) found that emergency department presentations linked to e-scooters have increased by over 1500% in five years.
  • Injuries can be serious and life-changing.
  • Fines apply for unsafe or illegal use (e.g. underage riding $305, not wearing a helmet $407, riding on a footpath $305, carrying a passenger $254).

We also want to continue supporting and reminding students about bike safety. It is fantastic to see so many students riding to school; however, it is important that everyone is riding safely, wearing a helmet and using designated crossings.

You will have received a Compass post about our Term 1 reports. We are very excited about this development in our reporting processes and look forward to hearing your feedback next term. If you haven’t already, please take a moment to read the Compass post titled “Term 1 Reports”, which explains the purpose of these reports.

We successfully completed our Term 1 emergency drill this morning. Thank you to everyone for carefully and calmly following instructions and evacuating during our soft start time. It is important that we practise different scenarios and at different times of the day so we are well prepared in the event of a real emergency.

Thank you for your ongoing support. It has been a wonderful term, and we are excited for Term 2. We wish all our families a safe and happy break and look forward to seeing you on Monday 20 April.

With thanks,

Anna-Marie Yelland
