Knowledge Rich Curriculum

We are excited to share an important development in our school: the move towards a knowledge rich curriculum. This improvement places a strong emphasis on building students’ understanding of important concepts, vocabulary, and content across history, geography, and science. Research shows that it is content knowledge that provides the basis for students to think evaluatively, creatively, and deeply. 

Our move in this direction is also guided by a commitment to equity and excellence. A knowledge-rich curriculum ensures that all students have access to the same essential knowledge needed for success at school and beyond. This is based on the work by Paul Kirschner & Carl Hendrick and popularised by Natalie Wexler. 

There will be three lessons a week dedicated to the topic. Lessons will build on prior knowledge, explicitly teach concepts and vocabulary, and provide opportunities for students to discuss, read, write and apply what they have learned. 

This curriculum will begin this term with all students across the school engaging in ancient history units; Mesopotamia in Foundation, Ancient Greece in Grade 1-2, Ancient Rome in Grade 3-4 and Ancient China in Grade 5-6. These units will run for approximately three weeks before we begin our geography units and finish the term with science units.
