Student Wellbeing

Social Intervention - Term 2
Beginning this term, students will have the chance to take part in social intervention groups. These groups will be run to explicitly teach and reinforce social skills. These can include (but are not limited to) communication, cooperation, making friends, impulse control, and PBL expectation practice.
Groups will run for 15-20 min weekly and will be hands on. Students will play games, do role plays, etc. to explicitly practice skills. Small groups will be multi-age and will take place over Thursday’s and Friday’s during class time.
Teachers have been asked to put forward students who they feel may benefit from the explicit teaching of social skills. If your child has their name put forward for this program, you will receive communication via email.
Positive Behavior for Learning
Dear Parents and Carers,
Last year, a core group of staff members participated in professional learning focused on implementing a new Behaviour Management Program at St Margaret’s. This program, known as Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL), is strongly supported by research and has been shown to improve student outcomes, enhance staff and student wellbeing, and reduce behavioural incidents. PBL uses evidence-based practices to promote positive behaviour and create safe, supportive learning environments for all students.
You may recall that late last year we invited parents to participate in selecting three new school values to replace our previous six. Staff and students were also involved in this process, and the values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience clearly stood out as the most strongly supported.
PBL focuses on promoting positive behaviour while ensuring consistency across students, teachers and other staff members. Clear expectations and behavioural boundaries will be explicitly taught at the beginning of each week and consistently reinforced throughout. We have also introduced our St Margaret’s Matrix which will be updated as needs arise. There is an example of our matrix at the bottom of this notice.
At the start of this term, our initial focus is on three key routines: Outside Play Areas, Morning Circle, and Toilet Routine. You may have noticed these routines displayed on the pinboard outside the undercover canteen area. The routines are also displayed in each classroom. These visuals are designed to support students by providing clarity and helping them understand our expectations so that everyone can feel safe and supported.
This marks the beginning of our PBL journey, and we will continue to keep you informed about new developments and updates as they occur. In the meantime, please feel free to stop by and read the routines displayed on our school pinboard, which will be updated regularly.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
