Our Vision - Part 1

Rebecca Hall, Executive Principal

Welcome back to Term 2. I trust that each member of our community has enjoyed a time of rest and reflection and is looking ahead to another term of growing, learning and serving together.

As we return, it is fitting to reflect on our shared purpose of empowering students to serve others and respond to God’s calling in their lives. Throughout this term, I will be writing a series of reflections on our College Vision Statement and the core beliefs that unite us as Christian community, as expressed in our Educational Creed.

When the Strategic Plan was reviewed last year, we affirmed our Vision Statement:

For the glory of God, Donvale Christian College partners with Christian families to cultivate each student’s academic growth, authentic faith and personal development, empowering them to serve others and respond to God’s calling in their lives.

Over the next few editions of Networks, I will explore what each section of this vision statement means for us as a College community, both in principle and in practice.

We begin with what it means to partner with Christian families. Scripture is clear that parents are the ones primarily responsible for the education and spiritual formation of their children. In Deuteronomy, Moses instructs the people of Israel to,

‘Love the Lord  your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.’ Deuteronomy 6:5-7.

God has given parents authority to determine the direction of their children’s education, guiding and directing them to love and obey the Lord.

We value and honour the fact the trust families place in Donvale Christian College by choosing to partner with us in the education and nurture of their children. Christian education is a shared responsibility. A successful partnership requires mutual respect and care, where the college values the contributions of parents, and parents understand that the college is a community committed to supporting the wellbeing of both students and staff and providing a positive learning environment for all.

In practical terms, this partnership involves taking time to build relationships with each student and their family and getting to know them as individuals. We are committed to strengthening our capacity to partner with you by providing an academically rigorous curriculum that meets the diverse needs of our students and fosters an environment in which every child is respected, valued, and able to learn.

We value the many ways parents contribute to the life of our college. Parental involvement—whether assisting in classrooms, attending camps and excursions, or volunteering through our parent group, Friends of Donvale—greatly enriches the learning experience and strengthens our community. These acts of service not only model partnership and generosity to our students but also help create a vibrant school environment where children feel supported, known, and connected. We are truly grateful for the time and energy parents invest in these activities, and we warmly invite families to participate as they are able.

Educators and parents sharing responsibility and working together provides the optimal conditions in which children can learn. For students to flourish, they need to arrive at school ready to learn well and equipped with the social and emotional skills that enable them to show respect, work cooperatively, manage their emotions, set positive learning goals and make responsible decisions.

Some of the other ways that we value your partnership include:

·      Ensuring your children are well rested, have had adequate sleep and are well nourished, with lunch boxes containing food that is nutritious, filling and healthy that will sustain their energy throughout the day.

·      Ensuring that your children come equipped and ready to learn, having completed homework tasks, bringing the equipment they need for learning, (including a fully charged device for Secondary students), and wearing the correct school uniform Schoolbox - Uniforms

·      Teaching your children to be patient, kind and considerate, helping them understand the importance of waiting their turn, putting others first and respecting the views and contributions of those around them.

·    Modelling respect for college staff, particularly in front of your children. If concerns arise, we ask that you follow our Grievance Policy and communicate through the appropriate channels. We want the very best for your children and are committed to working with you to resolve any issues.

·    Staying actively engaged in your children’s learning by regularly reading Schoolbox posts, taking an interest in their learning and classroom activities and asking questions that encourage reflection and conversation at home.

Finally, participation in the governance of the school is overseen by our Board of Directors, all of whom are current parents elected by Association members. Decision-making is therefore corporate, not individual. I strongly encourage families to become Association members; your involvement helps strengthen our community and ensures that Christian education will continue to flourish at Donvale for generations to come.

I also commend to you the latest edition of Nurture where others have also written about the unique parent partnership of our Christian School movement.

Thank you for partnering with us as we seek to nurture every student for God’s glory.
