VCE Art Creative Practice Excursion to the NGV

In week 8 of term 1, the VCE Art Creative Practice class journeyed to the NGV to view artworks in the opening week of Top Arts 2025 and to immerse themselves in the works of Yayoi Kusama at NGV International.

The Year 11s and 12s first visited Top Arts. Students engaged with a keynote presentation, outlining the themes of the exhibition, the artworks, student profiles and advice around how to develop their own Creative Practices to achieve the best results possible. This was followed by a folio viewing where students had access to folios created by previous year 12s from across the state. Students took note of how ideas were generated, artforms were experimented with, and how Visual Language was refined in the creations of artworks.

Their visit to Top Arts was concluded with a viewing of the exhibition. Students encountered works which explored themes of family, the ordinary and the mundane, and our environments, while gathering inspiration for their own practice.

Following lunch, the group attended the NGV International for the Kusama exhibition. Upon entering, the students had fun exploring the multitude of instillations, from Kusama’s Dancing Pumpkin to her 1400 polished stainless steel spheres making up Narcissus Garden.

Students had opportunities to explore polka dot filled rooms, infinite pumpkins and never-ending ladders, all while examining the contexts which inform works, and how Yayoi Kusama’s life impacted her own artistic practice and themes. Some students found resonance in Kusama’s Infinity Nets paintings from the 1960s, while others lost themselves in the infinity rooms and Dots Obsession.

At the end of the exhibition, students were able to contribute to the works. In Flower Obsession, students stuck red flower stickers to an ever growing and evolving space, which has been ‘obliterated’ by Gerbera flowers, littered in every corner of a faux apartment. In the Obliteration Room, students similarly covered a pure white painted interior of an apartment with vibrant dots, adding spectacle to the mundane.

A big thank you to Janet Berwick for attending the excursion.

Year 8 Art

Students create a drawing all together, appropriating the classic game ‘Tug of War’
Students create a drawing all together, appropriating the classic game ‘Tug of War’

In Year 8 Art classes, students completed their Drawing Folio assessment tasks. The students in 8B collaborated to create a newfangled drawing machine, with outstanding results.

Using the game ‘tug of war’ as inspiration, students affixed textas to string and twine. With a student hold each end of the string, they dragged their textas back and forth along sheets of paper, building up lines in a variety of colours. Students rotated partners, and colours, patterns and lines continued to layer up, creating an expressive composition.

Well done year 8s!
