Year 5 Update

It has been another fun, educational, and growth-filled fortnight in Year 5! As we progress through the term, we have a few important reminders and updates to share with you.
Device Reminder: Please ensure your child brings their device to school each day and that it is fully charged. When students do not bring their devices, it hinders their ability to participate fully in the planned learning activities. This is especially crucial as NAPLAN is fast approaching and it is an online test, and having their device allows them to participate authentically in preparation for NAPLAN.
Homework: Homework commences this week. Students are required to read for a minimum of 15 minutes, three times a week, and record their reading in their diary. We kindly ask that families sign next to the recorded reading to verify it has been completed.
Library: Our much loved Library sessions commenced last week. Students are reminded to return their borrowed books on their allocated day to enable them to borrow new ones. The library days are as follows:
- Tuesday: 5A, 5B, 5D, and 5E
- Wednesday: 5C
English: In English, we have continued to examine, engage with, and create persuasive texts, focusing on structure, persuasive devices, and figurative language. Students have planned, drafted, and published persuasive texts on why they should be able to sit next to their friends in the classroom. Please see some wonderful examples of students' work below.
Spelling, Phonics, and Handwriting: We have been identifying and writing words with the long 'a' and long 'e' sounds is fun and engaging activities. During handwriting sessions, we have developing our fluency and accuracy. Students have neem been using our competitive sides as we while typing through ‘Monkey Type’ as their try and beat their previous accuracy and time score.
Mathematics: In mathematics, we have been learning about length, data, and graphing. One particularly fun activity involved measuring, comparing, and ordering objects, including themselves, according to height, length, and width. This hands-on approach helped students better understand these concepts while engaging in enjoyable and interactive learning.
Sports: Year 5 sport continues to be a highlight for many. This term, we are participating in t-ball, netball, soccer, AFL, and badminton. We rotate through these sports every two weeks, providing students with a variety of physical activities to enjoy and develop their skills. This leads beautifully into what we have been learning about in Humanities—being healthy and the importance of physical activity for our physical and mental health.
Thank you for your continued support in your child's education. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Warm regards,
The Year 5 Teaching Team
