February Story of Hope - St Mary MacKillop

During the month of February, Melbourne Catholics have been reflecting on the life and lasting legacy of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, Australia's first saint.

When Mary made her first profession at age 24, she took the title ‘Mary of the Cross’ in recognition of Christ’s ultimate gift of love for us and the hope it signified. Her journey was not without challenges. She faced excommunication for doing what was right, particularly for the most vulnerable children. But she embraced challenges, even when the way forward was unclear, saying, 'Look upon your crosses as stepping stones to an eternity of happiness.’ Her unwavering hope in Christ is a powerful example to us all.

As we reflect on her life and example, may we too remember the power of teachers to be a source of hope, pointing to God and lighting the way.
