School Wide Teaching and Learning
In each edition of our school newsletter, we share with our community an insight into the curriculum being taught within our classrooms. This reflects our school's strong focus upon continuous improvement.
Each edition covers a different area of the curriculum, and is supported by our school-wide approaches to teaching and learning.
In this edition we provide you with a summary of the changes to the Mathematics curriculum this year.
This year, Upwey South Primary School is implementing Mathematics Version 2.0 throughout all year levels. Please read through the below information and graphics to find out a little more about Mathematics that is taught throughout our school.
The Mathematics curriculum is taught through six individual strands. (Probability begins in Year Three.) For more information on what is covered in these strands, please follow the below link.

Our lessons in Mathematics follow our Instructional model - The Gradual Release of Responsibility. This approach supports our students in revising previously taught content to acquiring new information and strategies.
To cater for the varying needs of our learners, Mathematics is taught in a range of ways. These include:
Concrete - using physical objects to assist students to solve problems
This could include unifix cubes, counters, dice etc.
Pictorial - create drawing to represent euquations, numbers or problems
Abstract - using numbers to sove maths problens such as equations.
