English Overview

WRITING

In Term One, our main focus has been on Exposition (Persuasive) and Imagination (Narrative) text types. We have revisited the text structure of both as well as spent focused lessons on how to build a confident and descriptive piece of writing. The structure of each can be seen in the posters above. We have also spent time in class working on how to edit a piece of writing and how to publish. We have seen some wonderful pieces of Writing this term. We have also been looking at descriptive writing using figurative language and have created our own hybrid animals to write our own stories about.

READING

Our class novel for Term One is A Series of Unfortunate Events No.1 The Bad Beginning, written by Lemony Snicket. The students have been loving listening to the novel in class and picking up different details and predicting where the story is going to go next. Each week, the 5/6 class teachers read two chapters of the novel followed by discussions of the chapters read. In the final two weeks of the term, students are going to compare and contrast the book to the film Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events (rated PG). It has been wonderful seeing the students engaged in the Reading lessons and having class discussions about the book.

Students have also been practicing their independent reading skills by completing independent reading throughout the week. Students are required to be able to sit and read silently for a set amount of time with a good fit book.
