Spelling

This year, our Year Three and Four students continue using the MultiLit spelling program. Students are split into ability focused groups and engage with three spelling lessons per week. So far this term, the students have learnt some expert words such as phoneme, grapheme, prefix and suffix. They have learnt some tricky words; words that do not follow the spelling rules and have learn some spelling patterns.

Reading

To begin the term in Reading, our students learnt how to choose 'good fit' books and learnt how to record their reading in their diaries. It has been fantastic to see the students enjoying reading and committed to reading for 20 minutes each night.

We have begun learning some reading comprehension strategies to help us better understand what we are reading. So far, our students have learnt the strategies of:

  • Prior Knowledge: what do I already know about this topic?
  • Connections: text-to-self, text-to-text and text-to-world
  • Predicting: using clues in the text to make a guess about what will happen next.
  • Questioning: asking questions as we read
  • Visualising: creating a picture of what we are reading

Writing

This term, the students have been working on their writing skills through a focused exploration of narrative writing and persuasive writing. In their narrative writing practice, students have been working on mastering the structure of a story, emphasising key components like setting, characters, plot, conflict, and resolution. Through various exercises, they’ve learned how to craft compelling story arcs, develop rich characters, and build tension, all while paying attention to the pacing and flow of their narratives. They have also focused on improving their ability to engage readers from the very beginning with strong openings, using techniques like vivid descriptions, action, or dialogue to grab attention.

In their persuasive writing practice, the students are beginning to understand the art of convincing the reader to adopt a particular point of view. They have been taught to construct well-organized arguments, using clear and logical reasoning supported by evidence, examples, and persuasive language techniques like rhetorical questions, and emotive language. The students have done a great job at completing some wonderful writing pieces.
