In the Spotlight

Safe Driver Training

On Friday 6 September students participated in the Safe Driver at Carnell raceway. Thanks to Yancey and Lisa O’Brien of Tenterfield Homemakers & Tenterfield Floorstyle, Tenterfield Lions and the ongoing financial support of Tenterfield Rotary, the price for this year’s SDT course dropped from $289 to $110!

26 students participated in the Safe Driver Course, developing their driving skills. Students who had participated last year spent the entire day driving 2 sports cars (one of which was a manual), a BT50 Ute, a Suzuki Jimmy and an entry level Suzuki Swift. Activities included Uncontrolled Breaking, designed to engage ABS and for students to feel what ABS does, and then developing their Threshold Breaking skills, which will stop a car in a shorter distance than ABS alone.

Then students did the Look Ahead Driving Control activity, in which students learned to use their peripheral vision when avoiding obstacles, rather than looking at the bollards, which leads to target fixation and hitting obstacles.

The 3rd activity was developing cornering skills on the Carnell racetrack.  This was done at speed, and the SDT crew provided feedback that some overconfident students initially performed poorly, but as their views became more realistic, their skill level demonstrated significant improvement.  And as usual it was the girls who shone when asked to push themselves into territory unfamiliar to them. Mr Woodrow’s favourite moment was witnessing Brooke Everett speed around the Carnell circuit in a manual sports car!

Our final activity was Threshold Breaking to avoid a child running onto the road. Students had to avoid a child at 40, 60 and 80 kph, maintaining control of the vehicle and putting into use the three skills they had learned earlier in the day.

Student feedback has been positive, and the SDT crew have since contacted the school to say what a wonderful group bunch of young people we have.

Silver Award Winners

Congratulations to all students who were presented with their Silver Award at assembly on Tuesday 17 & 6 September.

RU OK? Day

Thank you to students & staff who wore YELLOW on Thursday 12 September in acknowledgement of RU OK? Day. Ian from In the Booth provided students the opportunity to capture some lasting memories with their friends in the photobooth.

Ask R U OK? Any Day because life happens every day. A lot can happen in a year, a month, a week. Whether it’s your friend, family member, colleague, partner, or teammate, the people you care about go through life’s ups and downs every day.

So whilst R U OK?Day on Thursday September 12 is our National Day of Action, we encourage you to Ask R U OK? Any Day of the year because a conversation could change a life.
