Year 5 Retreat to New Norcia

New Norcia is a town in Western Australia, 132 km north of Perth, near the Great Northern Highway. It is situated next to the banks of the Moore River, in the Shire of Victoria Plains. New Norcia is the only monastic town in Australia, with its Benedictine Abbey founded in 1848.

Year 5 students loved learning about the history by visiting the cemetery, boys’ school (St Ildephonsus) and girls’ school (St Gertrude), Abbey Church, Education Centre (previously accommodation to Aboriginal children), Monastery and remembrance area for some Aboriginal children not treated well in the past.

Students also experienced a prayerful liturgy with the Benedictine Monks currently residing at New Norcia.

This was a long day for the students, but well worth the distance! The highlight for many was seeing Dom Rosendo Salvado’s crypt (1814-1900), our College Patron Saint.

Well, on another note, Term 3 has suddenly come to an end. Wishing all a very happy and safe school holiday. We look forward to seeing everyone next Term!

Warm regards,

Mrs Christine Pitman

Head of Junior School (Year 3 to Year 6)
