R U OK Day

On R U OK? Day at GPS, we talked about how helpful it can be to start a conversation with our friends when we notice that they are sad, frustrated, angry or just not themselves.

Children participated in various age-appropriate activities including workshops on the 4 steps of an R U OK? conversation, how to be a listening legend and considered what a good friend sounds like. Students in 306 made their own buckets and then filled other people's buckets with kind words to make them feel better.  It created an inclusive, friendly atmosphere and they enjoyed it so much, they didn't want to stop.

During Aboriginal culture class, the children had some great conversations with the older group around asking people if they are ok, and how that can look amongst Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people with the use of words and gestures. The group were both curious and fascinated with the word “yarn” and all contributed their own variations and deadly ways of asking someone if they are ok.
