Early Years PLC

Foundation and year one students have been focusing on procedure writing for this term. Students followed a procedure and created a troll and then students were able to write their own ‘How to Make a Troll’ procedure. In maths, year one students have been learning about place value and foundation students have been learning about addition and subtraction. During Book Week, 13 block students rotated through each class to read a different story, allowing students to be exposed to different classrooms and teachers. Students have also really enjoyed I-Time exploring a range of new inquiry areas.

 

Year 1 & 2 students have been learning about the structure of a procedure, and have engaged in two hands-on learning tasks (making fairybread and how to grow a bean in a bag) to consolidate their learning. As part of our IBL this term, students have been working with Mrs. Howard to explore the history of our local area and have been researching heritage-listed sites and Carter's Homestead Ruins. We have also all been busy completing our annual online assessment tests in maths and reading and also for the year 2 students - a Vocabulary test.

 

Primary Years PLC

This term, the primary year's team have taken part in the Footsteps program. We had book week and completed the reading challenge. During IBL, we explored science and the importance of bees in our natural environment.

 

In mathematics, we concluded our learning on mapping and learnt about fractions, chance and data and continually revised number and all strands through our interleaved lessons weekly.

 

Year 3 students are exploring procedural texts and literature through the text Charlotte’s Web, whilst the year 4 students, are exploring stories from Asia. Both year levels have been exploring different prefixes and suffixes during our morphology lessons to develop an understanding of word parts and how their meaning can be changed when parts of words are changed. 

 

Middle Years PLC

What a term the Middle Years has had; Footsteps, Bike Ed, Festival Choir rehearsals and their final performance was on the 18th of September [a wonderful performance], Book Week Parade, Athletics Day and a visit from Golden Grove High School [an introduction session for those students who are going there].

 

Students have also been busy completing their annual online PAT assessments for maths, reading comprehension, grammar and punctuation, vocabulary and spelling. 

They have also been involved in working through the HASS - civics & citizenship tasks; learning about democracy and our government system ready for the year 6 Parliament House, Government House + The Centre of Democracy excursion next term. 

The Year 5 students will visit the Tea Tree Gully Council later in the term.

 

Performing Arts

In Music this term students are listening to music and developing musical skills for creating elements of music when singing and playing instruments.

 

F-2 The students are learning Music: “Play it Again." They use chants and songs to explore the elements of music focusing on beat and rhythm, tempo and form as they compose, rehearse and perform a rhythmic ostinato using their voices, movement and instruments. Students are learning Music: “A Trip to the Stars.” Students are learning how singing and instruments are used to communicate meanings and emotions. 

 

3-4 The students are learning Music: “Play it Again” and “A Trip to the Stars”. They use chants and songs to explore the elements of music focusing on beat and rhythm, tempo and form as they compose, rehearse and perform a rhythmic ostinato using their voices, movement and instruments. 

 

Students compose, rehearse and perform music in small groups using the GarageBand app and write their own lyrics as a chant or a rap song. They collaborate as a group and arrange ideas to compose, rehearse and perform their music presentation to engage an audience.

 

5-6 The students are learning Music: ”What’s in the Box?” and “Pass the Beat.” They use chants and songs to explore the elements of music focusing on beat and rhythm, tempo and form as they compose, rehearse and perform a rhythmic ostinato using their voices, movement and instruments.

 

In music, students explore the concepts of beat, rhythm, tempo and dynamics. Students will compose, rehearse and perform music in small groups using the GarageBand app and write their own lyrics as a chant or a rap song. They collaborate as a group and arrange ideas to compose, rehearse and perform their music presentation to engage an audience.

 

Japanese

Students have been working on becoming more proficient with reading and writing Hiragana. The belt system of Hiragana has been very effective in encouraging and motivating them to keep going. 

 

Science

This term’s area of focus has been Biological Science where students have been understanding, identifying and observing plants and animals. 

 

Foundation and year 1 students have been working on developing an understanding of the external features of plants and animals, and how these are used and function. 

 

Year 2 students have finished the term looking at habitats, learning how habitats are places that meet the needs of living things, and creating habitats to accommodate different animal needs. 

 

Year 3 students have been participating in a variety of investigations to develop an understanding of taxonomy and how animals are classified into groups according to their features. 

 

Year 4 students have ended the term looking at food chains and feeding relationships (producers, consumers and decomposers) between a variety of native Australian plants and animals. 

 

Year 5 and 6 students have been working on a research project to develop an understanding of feral species in Australia and their impact on the environment and on native plants and animals.  

 

Physical Education 

Junior primary students have practised kicking skills and are now using their striking and ball skills in a modified game of T-ball. Primary students have been focusing on the importance and purpose of game rules. Students are now playing modified games of T-Ball. 

 

IBL

All students were involved in a Book Week session linking art to literacy with their buddy class focussing on this year’s winning book of the year for new illustrators. 13 block students are collecting, sorting and recording information about the geographical features of familiar places, why some places are special to people and sharing ways they can care for them.

 

304/305/306/309/310 students are posing questions, collecting, sorting and recording information about the history of our local environment and significant buildings.

 

SAPSASA Events & Results 

SAPSASA Boys Soccer carnival results were mixed with some wins, draws and losses. Thank you Mrs Michael for coaching.

 

SAPSASA Girls Football carnival saw the girls undefeated. Thank you Mr Smith for coaching.

 

Year 3/4 Hotshots Tennis carnival saw 6 teams compete against 2 other schools in a fun day. Thank you Mrs Maglio, Ms Kay and our wonderful parent helpers for supporting our students.

 

Junior Primary students participated in a free cricket clinic run by SACA.
