Move over Peter’s, Connoisseur, Blue Ribbon and Bulla!

There’s a new ice cream maker in town!

The Seniors have been investigating changes in states of matter and we have conducted different experiments about this to learn more. Our favourite experiment was a freezing experiment - making instant ice cream. Freezing occurs when matter changes state from a liquid to a solid.

In this experiment, we placed cream, sugar and vanilla into a medium-sized zipped bag and combined the ingredients once the bag was zipped securely. We then placed ice into a larger zipped bag and then sprinkled salt over the ice. Next, we placed the medium bag containing the cream mixture inside the larger bag on top of the ice and salt and zipped up the bag securely. Then we shook and massaged the bag (which was covered in a tea towel) for 5-10 minutes, until the mixture became the consistency of ice cream.

What’s the Science?

Pure water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius. When you add salt, the freezing point drops by a few degrees. When you add salt to the ice in the outer bag, the ice (at 0°C) is now above its freezing point – so it begins to melt. Melting requires energy, and in this case that energy comes from the cream mixture in the inner bag. Ice crystals start to grow in-between the tiny globules of fat in the cream and bubbles of air, causing the cream to freeze and change state from a liquid to a solid. See the image below:

Here is a copy of our experiment for you to try at home! Have fun, enjoy the yummy ice cream and have a lovely weekend!

Winter Lightning Premiership held on Wednesday 11th of October.

Grade 5/6 Winter Lightning Premiership

The weather was sunny and great conditions for all the 9 schools who participated in the Winter Lightning Premiership District. Our Grade 5/6’s had an enjoyable day.  The day went smoothly with all the District Physical Education Teachers working and consulting collectively.

I want to acknowledge all our SFS teachers and our Learning Support Officers (Ursula, Peacelyne and Kathy) without your support this event would not be possible.  A special thank you to our SFS Community, Trevor (Jakeb’s Grandfather), Susie ( Cory’s mum), and Lourdes ( Izaiah’s mum).

A huge congratulations to all our teams, Basketball, AFL, Handball, Tennis and Kickball.  Exceptional effort by our Kickball B Team who won the whole tournament by placing first. Our Basketball Girls Team came in second place and AFL team came in third place performing extremely well.

REGIONAL ATHLETICS

Good luck on Wednesday to Andi who will once again represent us at Regional Level in Athletics. Andi will compete in both the 1500 metre and 800 metre track events. We will be waiting eagerly to hear how you go once again!!!  We are so proud of you Andi. Your perseverance and determination is to be commended.

SWIMMING

Our second week of swimming was just as good as the first!!! Everything ran smoothly and students had a great time!! I would like to thank all our staff for their organisation and commitment that helped the swimming lessons to run smoothly. I would also like to thank the instructors at Casey Race. They were extremely organised and everything ran like clockwork. Finally a big thanks to our Junior parents who were able to come and assist in the change rooms after the swimming lessons.

A reminder to all parents that you are most welcome to come and watch, however we ask that you do not take photos or videos at the pool and only parents I have spoken to and debriefed are allowed to assist in the junior change rooms after the swimming lessons.

A reminder to parents that swimming will continue next week and the details are as follows:

Monday 16th October – LS1 Juniors, LS1 Seniors, LS2 Juniors

Tuesday 17th October – LS3 Juniors, LS3 Seniors, LS2 Seniors

Please note that LS1 Juniors will be attending the 11.45 swimming lesson on Monday and LS1 Seniors will attend the 12.30 swimming lesson. The two groups have swapped times to assist with the running of the Senior Dress Rehearsal.

Students will need to wear their bathers under their sports uniform and bring a plastic bag with their towel, undergarments and thongs. Students will wear thongs to and from the pool to make changing easier and then put their socks and shoes back on once they return to school.

Swimming timetables have been uploaded onto the Operoo permission form as an attachment. Please print it off and ensure you have it available at home as swimming days change for the different Learning Spaces. Timetables are now in PDF format and can be downloaded on mobile phones. I will place reminders in Morning Reminders, the newsletter and through our App each week. We would like students to come ready for swimming each week, without placing the extra burden on the office staff of having to ring parents to bring swimming items because students have forgotten them.

Grade 3/4 Basketball Clinics

What a great time our Grade 3/4 students had with Daniel from Casey Basketball Association. They learnt different skills, then put these skills into practice with activities they really enjoyed.

I would like to thank Daniel and Casey Basketball Association for giving our students this opportunity. If your child is interested in joining basketball, a flyer has been included in the newsletter for you.
