Over the past few weeks, we’ve been learning about whole-body listening and how to take care of property at school—whether it’s our own, shared, or school property. Students have also been practicing lining up when the bell rings, with some even singing the "Stand in a Line" song to help—it’s quite catchy! Reviewing these school behaviour expectations helps students understand what’s expected of them, builds daily routines, and keeps our spaces calm and orderly so we can focus on our learning.
Looking ahead to Week 7 and 8
English
Over the past week, students have been writing about a special bear or toy in their lives, focusing on character descriptions and settings. They have also been making meaningful connections to our mentor text, Nop. In the coming weeks, students will continue refining their ability to make text-to-self and text-to-text connections in their reading. We will be deep diving into two different texts, The Red Beast and Mr Huff. For writing, they will use Nop as inspiration to create their own short stories about a bear they designed in previous lessons.
In Core Literacy, students will be exploring:
🔹 Week 7: students will be learning the /sion/ and /ish/ sound. Reviewing the suffix /ed/ and learning the heart words "won" "son" "house".
🔹 Week 8: students will be learning /ie/ and the suffix 'ess'. As well as heart words "done" "front" "mother".
Maths
In Maths, students will learn mental math strategies to solve two-digit problems. These include using doubles (6 + 6), near doubles (6 + 7), and breaking numbers into parts they know well (like making 10). They’ll also practice adding by thinking in tens and ones. For example, to solve 56 + 37, they might add the tens (50 + 30 = 80) and then the ones (6 + 7 = 13), combining them to get 93. These strategies build confidence and fluency in mental math.
Students will also explore measuring with informal units. They’ll learn that longer units (like footsteps) are better for big spaces, such as a room’s width, while smaller units (like paper clips) work best for shorter objects or when more accuracy is needed. Hands-on activities will help them understand why certain units are more suitable than others.
Inquiry Focus: Knowing Me
This week, the Year Two classes began exploring the Zones of Regulation, a framework designed to help students recognise and manage their emotions. We started by investigating the Blue Zone, which includes feelings such as sadness, tiredness, boredom, and illness. Students have been identifying moments when they have experienced these emotions and reflecting on what they were doing at the time.
Next week, we will shift our focus to the Green Zone, where we feel calm, focused, and ready to learn. This exploration has been insightful, helping students develop a deeper understanding of their emotions and the physical reactions that come with them. Through this process, they are learning that our responses to emotions can be both positive and challenging—and that developing self-awareness is key to managing them effectively.
Reminders:
We are still needing a few ICT and Permission forms - please make sure you have the correct year at the top of the page.
- School hats need to be worn at each break - if a student does not have a hat they will need to sit in the shaded area outside of 2A's room.
Have a lovely long weekend!
