Level 1 Homework Matrix #3
Homework Viewing Instructions:
Hello and welcome to the week 6 Newsletter! We can barely believe that we are half way through term 1 already! Students have settled well into the Level 1 routines, exceeding our expectations with their independence and confidence. We would like to thank parents for dropping kids at the door and encouraging them to come into class on their own and get themselves set up for the day. It makes for a smooth morning for everyone in the classroom, so thank you!
Reminders:
Labor Day Public Holiday on Monday the 10th of March. No school this day. Enjoy the long weekend!
Hats must be worn this term! UV has been quite high. No hat means no play in the sunny spots. Students will be asked to sit in the shady spot at the front of the school. Students are more than welcome to leave their hats in their bag tubs overnight at school if this helps.
Sunscreen- teachers are unable to provide or apply sunscreen unfortunately. We suggest that you apply sunscreen on at home in the morning, if needed. You can also pack sunscreen in your child's bag and they can apply it before they go outside.
We encourage students to enjoy a fruit/vegetable snack at 10 am every day. We find this helps the students to stay energised and focused.
Learning for the next fortnight:
Literacy :
Did you know students participate in Reading Fluency everyday? Students are put into partners and they read a decodable reading passage to their partner. Their partner follows along with their own reading passage, listening and helping their partner when needed. This goes for 90 seconds and then students swap partners. They get to track their progress with the same passage each day. Here are some photos:
Our spelling focus for the next fortnight will be -ng as in strong, and -nk as in sank.
Hearts words: have, live, give, when, what, want.
We have loved our latest mentor text, Edward the Emu. We have completed lots of reading and writing activities including predicting, inferring, patterned writing, rearranging sentences, making connections, and identifying and using different forms of punctuation. If you'd like to read Edward the Emu with your child, here is a link to a read-a-loud version:

*Next week we continue the adventures of Edward and his new friend, Edwina, as we read Edwina the Emu! We are so excited to see what happens next...
* Thank you all for your support with your child's reading at home. It's been great seeing lots of book titles and comments in the school diaries. Keep up the good work!
Maths:
In the coming weeks, level 1 students will examine using counting strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems. This involves students using their part-part-whole knowledge of numbers up to 10. For example, 7+5=7+3+2=10 or 8 and 6 is the same as 8 and 2 and 4. We will also look at measurement and compare the lengths of objects.
Over the past fortnight students have enjoyed many different Maths games. "Race to 100" was a good one which involved students using MAB blocks and a dice, and seeing who could get to 100 first.
Inquiry Focus: Knowing Me
This week, the Year One classes began exploring the Zones of Regulation, a framework designed to help students recognise and manage their emotions. We started by investigating the Blue Zone, which includes feelings such as sadness, tiredness, boredom, and illness. Students have been identifying moments when they have experienced these emotions and reflecting on what they were doing at the time.
Next week, we will shift our focus to the Green Zone, where we feel calm, focused, and ready to learn. This exploration has been insightful, helping students develop a deeper understanding of their emotions and the physical reactions that come with them. Through this process, they are learning that our responses to emotions can be both positive and challenging—and that developing self-awareness is key to managing them effectively.
