Congratulations on another successful, hardworking fortnight. Interschool Sport Round 2, saw students play a double header against Beaumaris and Sandy. Despite mixed results the general vibe was that our students conducted themselves has great sports and had fun in the process. A gentle reminder that hats are essential. We advise everyone to apply sunscreen at home ahead of another double header next week.
Next week, Mr Marco will spend a lesson with each Grade 6 class as part of the Kitchen/ Garden program. In Week 8, classes will have a double lesson. We look forwrad to seeing their culinary skills develop.
The past fortnight, we have been working on the order of operations. Students have used opportunities to explore how the order of operations impacts the result. We have been impressed by their tenacity for problem solving. The focus has been on setting out clear and methodical working to ensure readiness for more complex equations. Here's an example of one of our review slides, showing clear and methodical working out:
Our students know that addition and subtraction are inverse operations with the same priority. They also know that division and multiplication are inverse operations with the same priority. We have explored various acronyms to help remember the order of operations. Students know all acronyms help us to remember the same order of operations. Here's a quick refresher:
This week we have completed our focus work on figurative language. In reading, students had lots of fun identifying and discussing idioms. We have examined examples in our own reading, samples passages read in class, and within Runt. Students have also looked at different types of verbs and their specific function in a sentence.
In writing, we have continued to work on writing narrative recounts. This week the focus has been on a diary format, incorporating the use of idioms and other figurative language. We will continue to work on our writers' voice next week, combining our empathy skills to write from another's perspective. Students are planning a diary entry from the protagonist in Runt, Annie Shearer.
In Inquiry this week we learnt about the Magna Carta, with a focus on the importance of this agreement in history and how it links to the present day. Students are starting to explore how and why laws exists. Our next step is to investigate the different levels of government and their responsibilities.
This fortnight we continued to look at Cyber Safety. In particular, the students learnt about the difference between public and private settings whilst on social meeting sites.
We continued working on 'The Resilience Project', with a focus on expressing our emotions through poetry. The students wrote some amazing poems, which were not only very descriptive with interesting vocabulary, but also explored a range of emotions.
On Tuesday we had a fantastic afternoon with our Grade One buddies. The Grade Sixes worked with the Grade Ones to play a maths subtraction game. It was lovely to see the Grade Sixes taking responsibility to help the Grade Ones set up and play the game. We were also impressed with the way our Grade Six buddy leaders stood up in front of everyone and explained the rules of the game.
