Mr Anthony Chalkley - Catholic Identity Leader
We were fortunate to have an opportunity to celebrate the beginning of our school year. Fr Jackson Saunders (a past student) led our Mass in St. Joseph's Church, Quarry Hill which we share as part of the Cathedral cluster. The students were both respectful and prayerful in their attendance. It was a beautiful celebration where our new leaders, both staff and students were blessed in their roles for the coming year. We had other members of our community, including past staff and principal, join us for the celebration.
A highlight was when Fr Jackson offered a blessing of thanks over some of the staff that had been at the school in his time as a student including Sr. Nora who was a Principal at St Monica's.
It was wonderful celebrating the Ash Wednesday liturgies in our church. All students showed great respect during this special prayer time. Thank you to families who joined us.
On Tuesday 4th March, Shrove Tuesday, our Grade 6 leaders had the privilege of attending the Caritas Project Compassion Launch in Hargreaves Mall. It was an inspiring opportunity for them to learn more about how we can make a difference in the lives of those in need, both here and around the world.
Project Compassion is a powerful reminder that small acts of generosity and compassion can create real change. As a school, we are proud to support this initiative throughout Lent, encouraging our students to live out their faith through action.
Our leaders were presented with donations boxes to distribute to our classrooms.
Please consider giving up a daily coffee or canteen purchase during lent and donating the money to Project Compassion. Even the smallest sacrifice can have a big impact on the lives of others. Well done to our student leaders for representing our school with pride and commitment!
The Sacred Heart Cathedral Choir in Bendigo is currently wishing to recruit new members from amongst students at local Catholic Schools and Colleges.
The mixed-voice Cathedral Choir (of sopranos, altos, tenors and basses) currently comprises 25 members, approximately one third of whom are on scholarship.
The scholarships, valued at $1,200 per year, offer a wonderful opportunity for students to contribute towards the liturgy at Sacred Heart Cathedral, and to further their musical education and appreciation. Scholarships are paid towards the end of each semester.
The Cathedral Choir sings music from the Church’s rich tradition of Gregorian chant and polyphony in Latin and English, plus traditional and contemporary hymnody and psalmody from Catholic and ecumenical sources.
Rehearsals are held in the Cathedral Choir Room, off Short Street, Bendigo, on Thursdays during school terms from 6-8pm (in Terms 1 and 4 due to extended preparations for Holy Week and Christmas) and from 6:30-8pm (in Terms 2 and 3), and on Sundays during Term from 9:45-10:40am in the Cathedral Choir Room, prior to the 11am Mass.
The Choir also sings at Christmas services and Easter ceremonies, and Diocesan celebrations (e.g. Chrism Mass on Tuesday of Holy Week and Ordination liturgies from time to time).
Auditions will be held at the Cathedral Choir Room on Sundays from November - February, after the 11am Mass which interested singers are encouraged to attend. Audition bookings are required.
Applicants are required to sing a number of items, including a familiar Christmas Carol (e.g. Silent Night) or Advance Australia Fair in addition to completing ear tests and a passage of sight-singing. Sight-singing ability is a distinct advantage.
Interested applicants are invited to complete the audition form below and return to Dr Paul Taylor, Organist & Director of Music at Sacred Heart Cathedral.
