This week, our Year 3s and 5s will participate in NAPLAN testing. While these tests serve to assess where our children are academically, it’s important to remember that they represent just one piece of the mosaic that makes up each child.
As educators, parents, and caregivers, we know that every child is a masterpiece created by God, designed with unique talents, passions, and abilities that can’t be captured by a number or score. Some excel in creativity, bringing colours to life through their art. Others shine in kindness, uplifting their classmates with encouraging words and a warm smile. Still others have a knack for building and fixing things, problem-solving, or storytelling.
This reminds me of the words of the apostle Paul: "We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us." — Romans 12:6a
God gives us these diverse gifts to serve His purpose in the world. How wonderful it is that He sees far more than just our test results! He sees our hearts, our character, and our potential. As we reflect on this, let us remind our children that while doing their best on NAPLAN is important, their worth is not defined by their performance. They are loved and valued as children of God, each with a unique role to play in His kingdom.
I encourage us all to take a moment to celebrate the gifts we see in our children—whether it’s their boundless imagination, their caring nature, their determination, or their sense of humour. Let’s remind them (and ourselves) that every talent is a blessing from God and an opportunity to glorify Him.
As NAPLAN approaches, let’s pray for our children to feel confident, supported, and at peace, knowing that God is with them in all they do.
