Term 2 In Year 3

Dear Families,

Welcome to Term 2! I am so proud of how well Year 3 students demonstrate our school values daily, and I am excited for another great learning, growth, and fun term. Below is an overview of what we will be focusing on this term.

Curriculum News

English

This term, we will continue to build upon our knowledge in reading, writing, and speaking. Students will further develop their phonological skills through our Spell Mastery program, enhancing their understanding of sounds and spelling patterns. Through our English Core curriculum, students will build their knowledge on what it means to be a part of a community followed by learning all about the world's most famous rivers and mountains. Additionally, students will engage with a variety of books to strengthen their comprehension and expand their vocabulary. Finally, they will create and edit engaging writing pieces, refining their ability to express ideas effectively.

Thank you for all your support in Term 1 with your child's take-home reader. Having the students return to the classroom, and discussing the books has been wonderful! Some parents have reached out and asked for more questions that you could pose to them, so here are a few examples you could use at home after reading:

  • What was this story about?
  • Can you tell me what happened in the beginning, middle, and end?
  • What new facts did you learn?
  • What was the most surprising thing you learned?
  • Who might enjoy reading this?

Maths

In Mathematics this term, our focus will be on developing key problem-solving skills and deepening our understanding of important concepts. Students will use mental strategies to solve multiplication and division problems, strengthening their number fluency. They will also explore area and perimeter, learning how to calculate measurements and find unknown lengths. Our work with decimals will involve reading, writing, and converting between different forms, while our addition and subtraction investigations will cover a variety of problem structures to build flexible thinking.

If you're unsure how to discuss Mathematics at home, a great place to start is the podcast Math is Figure-Out-Able!  Every Tuesday, they pose problems and explore different strategies to solve them in a segment called #StratChat. Each episode lasts about five minutes—perfect for short drives to school!

Wellbeing

We will continue to support students in developing their social and emotional skills through our school values of kindness, care, respect, and personal best.

This term, our focus will be on building friendships and understanding the importance of compromise in forming positive relationships. Students will also work on developing independence in their daily routines, fostering confidence and responsibility. Additionally, we will explore practicing kindness and how small actions can have a meaningful impact on our local community.
