Term 2 In Year 2
Dear Families,
Welcome to Term 2! We are so proud of how well our Grade 2 students have settled into school life, and we are excited for another fantastic term of learning, growth, and fun. Below is an overview of what we will be focusing on this term.
Curriculum News
English
This term, students will engage in rich literacy experiences to strengthen their reading, writing, and speaking skills. Through the Sounds-Write program, they will continue to build their phonics knowledge to support decoding and spelling. Students will apply their phonics skills to read and spell words accurately and explore a variety of texts to develop comprehension and vocabulary. They will have opportunities to construct simple and compound sentences and deepen their understanding of storytelling elements such as character, setting, and plot. Our English Core units will focus on family heritage and different family stories, followed by an integrated History, Geography, and Science unit on Extinction and the Changing Earth. Families can support learning at home by reading together daily and encouraging the use of phonics knowledge when writing and spelling.
Maths
This term, students will engage in hands-on learning experiences to develop their mathematical understanding and problem-solving skills. They will explore place value concepts, using grouping, partitioning, and rearrangement to work with numbers up to the thousands. Students will recognise, model, and order numbers to at least 1000 and practise efficient counting strategies, including skip counting forwards and backwards by twos, threes, fives, and tens. They will investigate the relationship between addition and subtraction and apply various strategies to solve problems, including missing number equations.
In measurement, students will compare and order length, area, volume, and capacity using informal units and use balance scales to compare mass. They will explore mapping skills by identifying relative locations and experimenting with transformations such as slides, flips, half, and quarter turns. Additionally, students will gather and display data, interpret simple graphs, and describe the likelihood of events using terms like ‘likely’ and ‘unlikely.’
Families can support mathematical thinking at home by incorporating counting into daily activities, identifying numbers in the environment, and playing simple number games together.
Wellbeing
This term, students will continue to develop their social and emotional skills through our school values of Kindness, Care, Respect, and Personal Best. They will participate in activities that promote positive friendships and cooperative play, helping them build strong relationships with their peers. Students will also learn to identify and express their emotions in appropriate ways and develop independence in their daily routines. Additionally, they will explore mindfulness techniques and self-regulation strategies to support their overall wellbeing.
Reminders
📌 Morning Routine: Please ensure your child is at school on time. Students should line up in roll order when the music plays, ready to enter the classroom when the bell rings. If you arrive after the bell, you will need a late pass from the office.
📌 School Uniform: As the weather gets cooler, please ensure your child has a jumper or jacket clearly labelled with their name.
📌 Lunchboxes & Water Bottles: Please provide healthy snacks (fruit or vegetable sticks), lunches each day, and a drink bottle filled with water.
📌 Reading Folders: Students should bring their reading satchel to school every Friday to change over their books. Please try and comment in your child’s reading log every day.
