Term 2 In Year 1
Dear Families,
Welcome to Term 2! We are so proud of how well our Grade 1A students have settled into school life, and we are excited for another fantastic term of learning, growth, and fun. Below is an overview of what we will be focusing on this term.
Curriculum News
English
This term, students will engage in rich learning experiences to strengthen their reading, writing, and speaking skills. Through the Sounds-Write program, they will explore phonics to support decoding and spelling. They will apply their phonics knowledge to read and spell words accurately, including those that appear frequently in texts. Students will also engage with a variety of texts to build comprehension and vocabulary, practise constructing simple and compound sentences, and develop an understanding of storytelling elements such as character, setting, and plot. Our English Core units will focus on exploring family heritage and different family stories, followed by an integrated History, Geography, and Science unit on Extinction and the Changing Earth. Families can support learning at home by reading together daily and encouraging the use of phonics knowledge when writing and spelling.
Maths
In Mathematics, students will engage in hands-on learning experiences to build their understanding of key concepts. They will explore addition and subtraction strategies, using tools such as number lines and counting on to develop fluency. Students will work with numbers up to 100, comparing and ordering them to strengthen their number sense. Measurement concepts will be introduced through practical activities, focusing on length, weight, and capacity. They will also investigate ways to collect and interpret simple data using surveys and graphs. Families can support mathematical thinking at home by incorporating counting into everyday activities, identifying numbers in the environment, and playing simple number games together.
Wellbeing
This term, students will continue to build their social and emotional skills through our school values of Kindness, Care, Respect, and Personal Best. They will engage in activities that promote positive friendships and cooperative play, as well as learn to identify and express emotions in appropriate ways. Students will also develop independence in their daily routines and explore mindfulness and self-regulation strategies to support their wellbeing.
