Term 2 In Year 4

Dear Families,

Welcome to Term 2! We are so proud of how well the Year 4 students have settled into school life at Turrun Primary School, and we are excited for another great term of learning, growth, and fun. Below is an overview of what we will be focusing on this term.

Curriculum News

English

This term, we will continue to build our students' knowledge in reading and writing through a range of engaging learning experiences. In our Government and Laws unit, students will explore how governments create laws to provide order, protect rights, and ensure fairness. They will also develop an understanding of the different levels and functions of government in Australia. As part of our Geography studies, we will be investigating the world's rivers and mountains. Students will learn how these vast landscapes influence climate, ecosystems, and human adaptation. In Handwriting, students will continue practicing writing words using clearly formed, joined letters while developing fluency and automaticity. Alongside this, they will also participate in Touch Typing to enhance their keyboarding skills. Through our Morphology studies, students will further develop their understanding of common base words, prefixes, suffixes, and generalisations for adding a suffix to a base word, helping to strengthen their spelling and vocabulary skills.

Maths

In Mathematics this term, our focus will be on developing a range of essential skills across key areas. Students will strengthen their understanding of multiplication and division by developing strategies to solve problems, with an emphasis on times tables and real-world applications. In length and area, they will measure, compare, and estimate using standard units through practical, hands-on activities. Our study of decimals will help students learn to represent, compare, and relate them to fractions in meaningful, real-life contexts. In data representation, students will collect, organise, and interpret data using tables and graphs to identify patterns and draw conclusions. To further build number fluency, students will refine their addition and subtraction skills by applying mental and written strategies to solve problems with larger numbers. In angles, they will identify, classify, and measure angles using appropriate tools and explore how angles are used in everyday situations. We encourage families to engage in everyday maths experiences at home, such as counting objects, recognising numbers in the environment, and playing simple number games to reinforce learning.

Wellbeing

We will continue to support students in developing their social and emotional skills through our school values of kindness, care, respect, and personal best.

This term, our focus will be on effective communication, helping students learn how to express their feelings and thoughts clearly and respectfully. We will also explore conflict resolution strategies, equipping students with the skills to navigate conflicts and misunderstandings in a peaceful and constructive way. Additionally, students will develop a deeper understanding of empathy, recognizing its importance in building strong and positive relationships with others.
