What's Happening in Grade One?

What's Happening in Grade One?
What an amazing start to the year! The grade one students have been busy getting into a routine, getting comfortable with their teacher(s) and forming positive friendships within their classroom.
Mathematics
The year one students have been using a range of concrete materials to help them learn about place value. They are using unifix, tens frames and bundles to learn about how many tens and ones are in a 2-digit number and learning to count large collections using efficient counting strategies.
Our students are also learning about time. They have been taking part in activities where they have estimated how long completing a task will take and learning about yearly calendars and how to use one. They have also started learning about location, focusing on words they can use to describe where something is and giving directions to find it.
English
In English students have been busy learning about narratives. We have established what an orientation is and have been including who, what, when and where in our narrative writing.
Students have also been exploring a variety of action verbs and describing words. They can list describing words that relate to texture, number, colour, position, shape and size.
Our students have also been learning new sounds to support their decoding skills. The grade ones can now say that a digraph is when two letters make one new sound like sh, ch, th, ph and ay.
Social and Emotional Learning
As part of our Social and Emotional learning sessions, students have been participating in the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships program and the School Wide Positive Behaviours (SWPBS) lessons. This aims to develop students' social, emotional and positive relationship skills. We know that efforts to promote social and emotional skills in children and young people have been shown to improve health related outcomes and subjective wellbeing.
Our Buzz awards system is also in full swing with students earning a buzz award when they display our school values of respect, resilience, teamwork and learning.
We are looking forward to the year ahead.
