Celebrations of Learning and Community

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM AND ACADEMY SOIREE - A NIGHT TO REMEMBER

On the 5th of December, our Instrumental Music Program and Instrumental Music Academy hosted their first-ever Soirée evening, and what a night it was! After just 2 years of the IMA and 18 months of the IMP, students took to the stage to showcase their incredible progress, delivering over 40 performances to a captivated audience of family, friends, and the broader community.

The students were simply outstanding, demonstrating their hard work, dedication, and passion for music as they performed on their chosen instruments. For many, this was their first time performing in front of an audience, and they rose to the occasion beautifully, filling the room with music and pride.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended, stayed until the very end, and gave their full attention to every performer. Your support and encouragement mean the world to these young musicians, who have put in so much effort to master their instruments.

Congratulations to all our performers—you have set the standard for what is sure to become a cherished annual event. We look forward to seeing how you continue to grow as musicians and performers in the years to come!

Thank you for being part of this milestone in our musical journey.

SECONDARY YEARS AWARDS EVENING

On Wednesday December 11th, we celebrated the academic achievements of students across Years 6-11. College Principal, Anthony Stockwell, alongside Heads of Year, presented each student with their certificate to acknowledge their achievements. The awards were grouped into the following categories:

Academic Excellence Award

These awards acknowledge students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in a subject area and are determined from academic results.

Co-Curricular Award

This award acknowledges one student who has shown outstanding contribution to and participation in a wide range of Co-Curricular activities offered at the college.

Citizenship Award

This award is given to a student who has displayed outstanding personal qualities, care, service to others and consistently demonstrates our College values of relationships, resilience, respect and responsibility.

The co-curricular and citizenship awards are very prestigious awards that are only presented to one student in each year level.

The evening was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the academic excellence of Hazel Glen College learners and recognise the commitments and hard work they have made toward their studies, resulting in outstanding achievements.

Congratulations again to all recipients of awards.

KWONG LEE DOW YOUNG SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Congratulations to Nathan, currently in Year 10, who got accepted into the Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program from the University of Melbourne. The program is an academic enrichment program, designed to support high-achieving secondary school students in achieving their personal best.

Successful applicants, like Nathan, will take part in an exciting two-year program of events and activities that will expand their academic and personal horizons and set them up for success at Melbourne, and beyond.

PEOPLE'S CHOICE AND PRINCIPAL'S CHOICE AWARDS - VCE ART AND TECHNOLOGY

During the success of our College Art and Technology Evening, our community got to vote for their favourite VCE artwork. Our College Principal, Mr. Stockwell also chose his favourite pieces.

Congratulations to Ebonie and Tayha who's artwork were selected by Mr. Stockwell for the Principal's Choice Award. Ebonie created the whale painting and Tayha created the Fairies Book.

Here's something that Ebonie wrote about her piece:

"Work name: Taijitu Whales

My piece, “Taijitu Whales”, was inspired by Claude Monet’s, ‘Water Lily Pond’. I took away elements of symbolism throughout his piece to create the idea of making art which displays nature as a peaceful habitat. The blue whales are a symbol of hope which is why I positioned them in a yin and yang (Taijitu) formation. The flowers and lily pads were placed not only to ‘decorate’ the water but to include a feeling of beauty and femininity. My goal was to allow the viewer to look at my art without feeling overwhelmed or like they had to analyse what was going on. I created this piece with the intention of someone observing it to be peaceful and balanced." - Ebonie

Congratulations to Lujain, who won our People's Choice Award. Here's something that Lujain wrote about her piece:

"This dress is a heartfelt tribute to my Palestinian heritage, designed not only to explore culture through fashion but also to honor the strength and resilience of my people. Every element of the dress is intentional, with deep cultural meaning. The light color palette was chosen for its positive psychological influence, offering a sense of calm and hope. The middle panel of the skirt, made from kuffiyeh fabric sourced from Amman, Jordan, carries the weight of Palestinian identity and resistance.

Designed with a specific purpose, the slit-sleeve allows easy access for an arm amputee to wear a prosthetic, while the crepe-like bust panel provides comfort, modesty, and flexibility. The belt is hand-embroidered using traditional cross-stitch—a technique passed down through generations—bringing a personal connection to my roots. Satin and chiffon were chosen for their elegance, adding a touch of luxury and formality to the dress, while deep pockets ensure practicality without compromising style.

This dress is a fusion of tradition and modernity, blending cultural heritage with thoughtful design. It’s a celebration of identity, resilience, and the beauty of my homeland." - Lujain
