Grade 5/6 News

Morphology
In the last few weeks, we've been learning about the prefix con-, trans- and fore-, and its meaning. Students have been analysing words with this prefix and identifying the base of the word to find its meaning. They have also been spelling, reading, and using these words in sentences throughout the week. Writing In Writing the students have been learning how to build suspense just like in our modelled text Beowulf. As always, we rehearsed our story using our story map and actions and then looked closely at our writing strategies. The students have begun planning and drafting their narratives to include the tools we learnt about in class including: describing a cosy setting, personifying the setting, suggesting something is about to happen and making your character hear, see, touch, or smell something ominous. All these skills have enhanced students' writing to build that sense of suspense and excite their audience about what is coming next in their writing.
Maths
“Money makes the world go round," they say! In 5/6A, we’ve been learning about financial maths, focusing on key concepts like budgeting, saving, and calculating discounts. Students have enjoyed applying their mathematical skills to solve real-world problems, emphasising the importance of understanding vocabulary, interpreting questions accurately, and checking the reasonableness of their answers.
In 4/5A, students have been learning about elapsed time! They've been tackling real-life challenges, like figuring out departure and arrival times, calculating precise durations to the minute, and mastering elapsed hours.
