Grade 3/4 News

We hope this newsletter finds you well as we approach the end of another fantastic year of learning! The past few weeks have been filled with exciting activities, and we’ve been reflecting on all the wonderful growth and achievements throughout the year. Here’s a look at what we’ve been working on recently:

Maths: Over the past few weeks, we’ve been exploring 3-dimensional objects and their relationship to 2-dimensional shapes. Students have been classifying 3-dimensional shapes by their features, such as faces, edges, and vertices, and learning how 2-dimensional shapes make up the faces of these objects. Additionally, we have been working on identifying and classifying angles. Students have learned about right, acute, and obtuse angles, practising how to recognise and name them. They’ve also been identifying objects that contain these angles, further deepening their understanding of angles in the world around us. You might like to ask your child to find examples of these angles in everyday objects!

Morphology: We’ve been focusing on the prefixes out- and sub- and how they change the meaning of words. It’s a great idea to test your child on some words that use these prefixes and see if they can use them in a sentence. This has been a fun way for students to expand their vocabulary and understanding of word formation.

Writing: In writing, students have been using picture prompts to support their narrative stories, following the Story Champs Program. They have been practising skills from our Sentence and Grammar sessions, such as creating noun and verb phrases and using appositives. We’ve also been sharpening our editing skills, learning how to revise and improve our writing. Students have embraced the idea that all mistakes are opportunities to learn, and they’ve been putting this mindset into action as they refine their work.

Spirit House Leaders: Grade 4 students have been working hard to create and present their own speeches for the Spirit House Leadership roles. They practised reading their speeches and presented them to their school team. Students then voted for who they thought would best represent the school and their team’s values. It was amazing to see how well the students identified their own skills and explained how they could support their team. We are proud of all the students for their effort and dedication throughout this process.

RACV Bike Safety: This week, we had guest speakers from RACV who taught the students about bike safety. They learned how to stay safe when riding their bikes to and from school, with an emphasis on wearing helmets and following road safety rules. It was a valuable session that helped reinforce good habits for bike riders.

Camp: The Years 3-6 students had an unforgettable time at camp this week! It was an excellent opportunity for students to build independence, strengthen friendships, and celebrate the achievements of the year. We’re sure next year’s camp will be even better!

End of Year Thanks: As we approach the end of the year, we want to extend a huge thank you to all of our parents for their incredible support throughout the year. Your involvement in your child’s learning has been essential in helping them reach their full potential, and we are grateful for the strong partnership we’ve shared. It has truly been a year of growth and learning, and we are incredibly proud of all the students.
