Grade 1 News

Dear Year 1 Parents/Guardians,
Learning Focuses- Below is what we have been focusing on with our learning the past three weeks.
Phonics
Our focus has been on revising sounds with alternative spelling patterns to strengthen students' reading and writing skills. The English language is made up of many sounds, some of which can be tricky because they can be spelled in multiple ways.
Recently students have been learning about the placement of alternative spellings patterns for the long o sound /oa/ and the long u sound /ew/. For long o, this includes: /o/, /ow/, /oa/, /o_e/ and for long u, this includes /u/, /oo/, /ew/, /u_e/
Examples:
/o/ - Go
/ow/ - Slow
/oa/ - Coach
/o_e/ - froze
/u/ - Human
/oo/ - Tooth
/ew/ - threw
/u_e/ - cute
Knowledge
In Literature and Knowledge, students have been learning about a text called ‘Rose meets Mr. Wintergarten’. We have been exploring how we can describe characters with both internal and external traits..
Maths
In Maths lessons have been learning about addition and subtraction.
- Shapes: Students have been revising what they know about shapes by counting the number of sides and corners to match it with it’s name. THey also looked at regular and irregular shapes and how they are still the same shape but they just look different.
- Data: Students have been revising what they know about collecting data using efficient strategies like tally marks. When collecting data, students looked at the questions and were able to limit the options to a smaller number of selections to allow for observations about the data to be easily made.
SEL - In Social and Emotional learning students are learning to discuss the types of situations in which they would be best to seek adult assistance.
A Special note:
We would just like to take this time to thank all the families for supporting their child/ren with their learning journey this year. We really appreciate it and hope you look forward to a well deserved break before they start Year 2.
