VISUAL ART NEWS

What a fun experience we have had in the Art Room this year. I have really enjoyed working with the students at Wimba Primary School and have been very impressed with their creativity, imagination and artistic skill. We have had the opportunity to explore the elements of art and principles of design and have learned lots of new skills and techniques along the way. Students have had the opportunity to explore drawing, painting, collage, modelling, textiles, printmaking, construction and mixed media.

FOUNDATION

Students in Foundation have been learning about patterns. They have been encouraged to identify different patterns within artworks and to draw their own patterns using different shapes and colours. Students then painted gingerbread houses and created two and three colour patterns by painting dots.

YEAR 1 & 2

Students in years 1 and 2 have been learning about landscapes. They have learned how a landscape is composed of different layers including the foreground, middle ground and background. They have explored the work of artist Eloise Renouf to see how she combines lines and colours to create beautiful trees. Students then created their own landscapes by making textured paper with paint. They built their landscapes from the background to the foreground by making a collage and used overlapping to create the illusion of space and depth within their artwork.

YEAR 3 & 4

Students in year 3/4 have been learning about the properties of oil pastels. They have been practising how to blend them together effectively when drawing tropical birds. They have also learned how to use oil pastels to create a resist by painting over the top of the pastels with watercolours.

Students in Year 4/5 have completed their sculpture project by adding details such as hair, clothing and accessories. They have been encouraged to write an artist statement and a self-reflection to consolidate their learning and identify their strengths and weaknesses.

YEAR 5 & 6

Students in year 5/6 have been exploring modelling techniques using clay. They learned how to make a pinch pot and how to join pieces of clay using the scratch and attach method. Students then designed and created a bobble head character. They created kinetic art which has and element of movement. The head is attached to the body using a spring to which allows this piece to move freely within the artwork.

As we conclude the Visual Art Program for 2024, I would like to wish all Wimba PS families a wonderful Christmas and a very Happy New Year. I am already looking forward to all the wonderful things the students will design, make and create in 2025.
